Discrimination Suit At Barneys New York Is Quickly Becoming Jay-Z’s Problem Fans Want Hip Hop Mogul, Who Has Lucrative Deal With Store, To Take A Stand

JAY-Z NOW FEELING THE HEAT

The “shop and frisk” scandal, as some are calling it, is causing problems for hip hop artist Jay-Z, who has a lucrative deal with Barneys New York, CBS 2′s Lou Young reported.

“If he don’t step up then my respect for him is low. I like his music, yeah,” fan Juanita Landrau said.

There’s strong sentiment about Jay-Z at the Marcy Houses where he grew up. It’s a place where a lot of people have experienced the indignity that comes sometimes with “shopping while black.” Some want him to take a stand, but others said they already know what he’ll do.

“Probably do the deal and forget about it. Based on the person that he is, and we see because we live here,” said Bed-Stuy resident Lamar Ziegler, who added when asked if he thinks Jay-Z has forgotten the place, “Totally!”

“If they’re targeting minorities and he’s a minority, I think what he has to do is step up and put pressure on them as well,” resident Sheena Rue added.

Crisis management expert Rich Auletta told Young the rapper and the department store are running out of time.

“They got to do something. They just can’t let it sit there. This is taking off; it has legs,” Auletta said.

Auletta’s advice is for Jay-Z is to confront Barneys’ CEO and help him craft a response.

“I’d meet with the folks at Barneys and say ‘this is unacceptable, let’s do something that makes a difference and tell people you understand,’” Auletta said.

So far, that hasn’t happened. Jay-Z is currently in Europe on tour and Barneys’ CEO said the store is now conducting an internal review of practices and procedures.

In a statement, Barneys denied that it was involved in any detention, saying “after carefully reviewing the incident of last April, it is clear that no employee of Barneys New York was involved in the pursuit of any action with the individual other than the sale.”

“Barneys New York has zero tolerance for any form of discrimination and we stand by our long history in support of all human rights,” the statement said.

The company has also retained a civil rights expert to review its policies and procedures and has reached out to community leaders to start a dialogue.

Kelly said the cases are under investigation.

Where is Marvin when you want his take?

I was trying to stay out of this racist thread, but since you asked:

First the title is wrong. Stop using slang. It's ridiculous to talk to anyone in broken english, especially when the people you're speaking to don't use it. You're fully aware myself and Janelle speak proper english, so what's the point? Trying to be funny? Don't quit your day job. Personally, I hate it when black people use slang because it perpetuates the stereotype we aren't smart enough to talk like we have some sense. I despise when a white person does it because they think we all talk like that. It's stupid at best and racist at worst.

Second, if you did some fact checking, you'd see that Mr. Carter has responded already: http://lifeandtimes.com/a-statement-from-shawn-jay-z-carter

I respect his decision because unlike the rest of us, he has ties to the company in general. If this did happen, I know he'll pull the plug on the deal. If not, he'll keep it moving. Same thing goes for me, if this didn't happen, I'll retract my post and eat my words. It's called integrity.

Posting articles with the admitted intent of baiting members is pretty low. mad.gif

Not cool. no0pb.gif

Isn't every thread started with the intent to bait other posters into conversation? As long as the threads/posts aren't insulting, I don't see the problem with focusing on one or more posters with an article.

Truth. But Danno could have gotten my attention without resorting to using jive talk.

This whole forum is all bait, all the time. That's why only certain things are discussed, things that have already been known to result in many posts.

Now race has become an exciting issue because there are people willing to attempt to discuss it.

It appears the OP just finds one person to be the "token black guy" which is too bad.

You're smarter than that, I hope.

Topics should be started to encourage open discussion from the VJ Community. When you openly admit seeking a response to a thread from a particular member, then you're into baiting territory.

No duh, me not smrter den dat.

So you don't think threads are started to get responses from particular posters? Who's the not so smart one now?

There's nothing wrong with attempting to get particular posters to respond to your topic, that's what a discussion board is all about. Everything is bait for discussion.

correct any post is a bait post.we all post to get responses and we all know what each others hot button issues are.. At the end of the day we argue, joke and carry on , but for the most part good folks here

I don't get why the post is racist. It's just a news story

The story isn't racist. Danno was trying to be funny by using slang in the title.

The story as is is not racist, but the OP used some special magic on the title and made it read something like "Yo Dawg! Jay-Z in trouble, dig!" and admitted he was hoping Marvin would respond.

Now the title is normal, reporting the news story.
