invoice:

1. email as attachment.

2. regular postal mail

3. certified postal mail with signature

4. fax

Use all 4 methods of sending invoice. Why? Must to document it, for small claims court. If 'acquaintance' says 'I never got invoice', you have delivery proof on at least 1 delivery type.

Yes, I emailed her but she didn't say anything back. I know she got it. But she's just being unreasonable.

I'm somewhat familiar to the procedures, in another state- my ex owned a business and he had to sue people all the time to get paid, in a magistrate court. (I'll have to find out the difference between a magistrate court and a small claims court- or are they a same thing?). Normally the defendants paid him before the hearing. I hope this will work that way for me too.

InTexas and Lousiana I used the nearest Justice of the peace. Overa certain amount then had to go to county court.

user19000 - apologies, when I wrote 'use all four ways', I meant just that -

send out that invoice, 4 different ways.

email is not sufficient.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
Ya know, you can find the answer to your question with the advanced search tool, when using a PC? Ditch the handphone, come back later on a PC, and try again.

In California, the only court you can go to is Small Claims Court. You must sue her in the city in which she lives (You don't have to like this rule, but it is the rule.) Even if you win, you may have problems collecting. On the other hand, she may settle with you.

IMHO, it's $700. How many hours and how much of your resources will you use to get this $700? Going from LA to Alameda will cost you something. It doesn't make sense to spend $200-$400 in the hope of getting $700.

Time to write this off as a learning experience. She will get away with it. But you need to focus on getting on with your life too.

Email is completely sufficient. It is notice that is going directly to the debtor. There is no reason to send it 4 ways.

Sometimes it is about more than the money... I understand and sometimes the sheer desire to make them think twice about using someone else like this is better than just the financial gains... Sometimes it is the satisfaction of standing up for yourself and your own worth...

Make sure you also send a certified/signature invoice to prove to the court that it was received. Then you can file your case in the jurisdiction where they live. Personally, I would include a letter stating that if yo don't hear back from them by a certain date, you will be filing in court so they know your serious.
