Postponing Interview (travel from abroad)

My husband and I have been frantically trying to put our packet together and we finally got an email telling us that we're in line to get an interview in Sydney.

The only thing is that prompted us to look at the expiration, and we didn't realise that we had to use the Immigrant visa and stay in the States within 6 months.

After all this, we're not quite ready to move from Australia. We most likely will move permanently in about a year. However, we're about to have our first baby born any day now, and we want to make sure we can visit the States to introduce the little baby to my 86 year old grandmother and my family.

Two questions:

1. Can we postpone our interview? If so, for how long? We read somewhere that this is possible, but we're not sure how to go about it.

2. If we postpone, can we still travel to the States before the case is reopened and/or an interview is scheduled? We'd only want to go for about a 2-3 week visit to introduce our little boy to the family.

3. Is there anything else we should know about how these deadlines/etc.. might work? Have we completely messed up everything?!?

Any help would be greatly apprecaited. Between being 38 weeks pregnant and trying to figure out a future immigration, things are a little stressful these days!

Thanks so much for any help you can give, and have a good day!

Thanks for the link. We'd read through that information, but it doesn't really cover where we are.

We've already been notified that we're in line for an interview, and we're waiting for that interview to be scheduled. As I understand it, once they schedule you it's a different kind of situation. We'll want to postpone for close to a year, and then travel for breif visit(s) within that year (so technically we're waiting for the interview to be scheduled).

I sent an email asking the NVC and the Sydney Consulate not to schedule the interview and to put our application on hold, but I'm not sure how that works or the logistics around that. Does anyone know?

Thanks so much!

Have you finished up ALL DOC Intake at NVC?

If no, then stall with the next thing. You have 1 year per thing (there are 2 things) at NVC, to get it in.

If YES, then I suggest you use a telephone, call into NVC when they are OPEN, and talk with a supervisor (not the first person that answers the phone) and ask for an interview date around 'your schedule'.

Failing all of that, assuming NVC sets the date for the IV Interview,

wait 10 days after NVC sets the interview, then

EMAIL THE IV Unit, ask for a later date.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
Ya know, you can find the answer to your question with the advanced search tool, when using a PC? Ditch the handphone, come back later on a PC, and try again.

Thanks for that!

We have finished MOST doc intake at the NVC (we're missing two things, but they said to just bring them to the interview and that we've moved on to scheduling that).

We called the NVC and talked to someone a few days ago (not a supervisor, but someone pretty helpful, regardless). They told us to email the NVC and the Sydney embassy (which we've done), and that the scheduling is handled by Sydney.

Neither one seems to be very responsive, though, which is why we're a bit concerned. I heard that you can only postpone your interview so much, and I'm not sure that we can postpone for that long.

If only we had just stopped at the last step....

We'll give the NVC a call again to speak with a supervisor, but in the meantime, is there anything else we should be doing? I fear that we've messed up our whole process...

Thanks for your help,

Eva

eh - 'normal' stuff, for getting a later interview date.

Assumptions:

1. NVC scheduled yer Immigrant Visa Appointment at the IV Unit

2. 10 days have passed since the interview date was scheduled

3. the casefile has successfully travelled from NVC to Sydney

4. US Embassy/Land o OZ/Immigrant Visa Unit has opened the casefile (check with DoS Hotline for this timetick/status)

if all 4 are true, EMAIL the IV Unit in Sydney, ask for a later interview date.

[the above is the normal method of getting a later interview date when NVC handles the scheduling. No Wombats were damaged, much, whilst I wrote this]

-----

contrari-wise with aforethought -

IT IS POSSIBLE to stall at NVC given yer exact timetick, as, although you are IN the scheduling queue, there's no clue for when you'll actually be scheduled. If'n you get a Supervisor on Monday, is possible to suss out more delay, ask for more delay, beg for more delay, keeping the casefile at NVC for some time.

For now, I say, call NVC on Monday, talk with a Supervisor, ask for a hold, not be put into the scheduling queue for <<insert duration o time, sidereal motion units>>

Thanks for that!

Is asking for an interview date that's one YEAR later a bit too long to postpone?

Also, we haven't heard yet if the case has been succesfully transferred or that it's IN Sydney yet. We just know that the NVC has moved it to Sydney and that Sydney will schedule it and let us know. How do we check on it's travelling status?

How do we check the with the DoS Hotline for when they have/will open the file?

Thanks so much,

Eva

ok - that's weird. NVC not schedule for Sydney IV? Many other IV Units get scheduled at NVC ..

I say call DoS Hotline, ask for casefile status. Do that every 2 days. When you hear of 'casefile opened' as casefile status, it's safe to EMAIL IN to ask for a later date.

Why not before? They probably won't 'talk' to you, until the casefile is there.
