OK, I just went thru this and we live in Florida. You have one year as long as he does not work to get a Florida drivers license. 2nd you will not be able to get him one until his paper work has been excepted for a green card. He does not need the green card only prove that he has filed. Same with Florida ID's. If his countries drivers license is also in english he will not have any trouble driving here. Check with local tax office's because each one will give a different story. Also check with your insurance company as they may not except him to drive with out a FL license because he is emigrating, some will some won't.

Hope this helps.

Each state has different rules. I had to do a driving test in my state though different DMVs in different counties seemed to provide different answers on the phone when I was making my initial inquiries. At the end of the day it was easy enough to get it all done and convenient, as mentioned, to have a state-issued ID sooner rather than later. It helped with everything from opening bank accounts to registering the kids for school.

Be careful with the requirements a few years back someone on here from California arrived on a K1 ran up to Vegas to get married and got pulled over on the way home and got a ticket because California gives you 10 days to get a state licence after moving here.

Like others, strongly urge your husband to get a FL license upon arrival. Aside from making him legal (and FL is aggressive about checking these things) it is also smart because he will learn local laws. Also need to think about insurance - if he's driving you need to add him to your policy and for that he will need a valid license.

Ok thank you so much for your help everyone! so will he be able to get his license/ID with the stamp from his passport? because I don't know how long it takes for USCIS to mail the green card when you are here or the SSN.

No such thing as an international Drivers License, there is a permit which is basically a translation.

Check with the DMV as to how long new Residents have to get a license, varies by State.

I knew that it was 10 days in CA but the ticket being issued on a k-1 on the way home from 'eloping' seems like a grey-ish area since conditional residency on a k-1 is contingent on getting married , so I would have thought it would have been 10 days after the marriage.

That'll be a big grey area ten. Ten days after POE you need to have a Cali licence done ? An application process which requires SSI , Proof of Residence and passing the theory test.

I'm not resident until the GC is approved so yep looks pretty grey to me and I'd certainly take advice.

It may vary from state to state (I'm in PA) but your foreign license plus an international license allows you to drive for up to a year before getting your state driver's license. Both my husband (the USC) and I are doing this as his US license lapsed decades ago so he has to go through the testing process too. To buy a car here, my husband had to get a state photo ID which you can get from the DMV. We are both insured to drive using our foreign licenses but are motivated to pass our tests asap as having a US license will bring our premium down considerably.

Best wishes

PA is 60 days.
