We went to the DC DMV today with the K-1 visa, I-94, temporary employment authorization (stamped at airport) and marriage certificate.

DC has a rule. Cannot get drivers license on a K1 until either you have:

1- Permanent EAD, or

2- Green Card.

Just FYI

Thanks for posting. I'm hoping when I move to MO in January, I won't have the same problem. I'm annoyed that after driving for 35 years, I might be prevented from being able to drive until paperwork is in order down there. Especially since I drive while visiting there. I've never had any tickets or accidents. It is definitely up to the state, but would be nice if they would revisit these things and make some changes. It has a huge impact on new families, particularly if there is no bus access!

Just my thoughts,

Carla (F)

Generally your foreign driving license will allow you to drive here. The thing is to become familiar with the laws of the state you are living in and get a license there as soon as possible.

You should check with the driving license authority in your state for particulars. I'm sure they are on the web.

The main thing is don't speed, don't drink & drive and learn to be aware of the laws where you are driving.
