Again, when they rattle off comparative numbers they are very selective on who they pick.... so the numbers say what they want.

If the links I posted are accurate, then there is ample evidence that some countries with very strict gun laws have a higher suicide rate than the US, such as Japan, China, South Korea, etc. And oddly enough, Brazil, which has a much higher murder by gun rate than the US, has a very low suicide rate.

For Japan, having guns or not has nothing to do with their suicide rate. Many people still get married in Japan with their short knife, forgot the name of it, which can be used for suicide. However with the invention of trains, committing suicide has become easier therefore the rates are increasing.

A lot of their problems stem from social pressures, S. Korea as well.

Interesting that firearm suicides declined as household ownership of guns declined. Fewer households have guns, fewer suicides are committed with guns. Shocker, eh?

My point was to refute those here who claim that the suicide rate would drop with stricter gun laws, or even confiscation of guns. If someone wants to die, they'll figure out a way to do it, gun or no gun.

many suicides would end up being thoughts of suicide or attempted suicide with less effective means. in the heat of the moment a suicidal person with access to a gun is in much deeper than a suicidal person looking for a way to go about it.

what do you mean by "parts of the inner city needs more attention"

-I would assume the same thing, pulling the trigger kinda seals the deal.

-I was referring to Poor black parts of the Urban landscape, do you beed to see a map to see what parts of Detroit (for example) the murders take place?

Rubbish! Only the yakuza carry any kind of knives on them.

Don't take the bait. So far everyone has avoided the subject Danno is dying to raise.

Wonder what would happen to the suicide rates in these countries if they did have easy access to guns? My guess is they would go up. Because a country with strict gun laws has a higher suicide rate than the US, it does not correlate to saying guns don't make suicide rates go up. There are reasons why people commit suicide, guns just make it quicker and easier. The numbers show that when guns are removed from the equation, the suicide rates go down.

and the people who live in those areas wouldn't benefit from less guns available?

Thats an assumption many of us have made, though we see little evidence of it.

Why?

The assumption is that you "can" strip all those residents (good & Bad) of guns and since that is impossible to do, the problem is- Who is more likely to still have guns,

the Good folks or the bad.... in those areas?

The answer to that is also who has control.

that's your assumption. i think that education and jobs in addition to proper gun control would work wonders. gun control isn't the goal, big picture, because gun violence is a symptom of the problem not the root of the problem.

Suicide by train has got to be one of the most gruesome ways to off yourself. Had a buddy of mine jump in front of an Orange Line train our senior year in high school. It wasn't pretty, they found his severed head about 100 yards away from the rest of his body.
