A sharp decrease in suicides since the gun ban went into affect? But this can't be. People should still be killing themselves with whatever they can get their hands on, clubs, knives, hands or feet. Surely there are plenty of other means available to commit suicide than by gun. What's going on?

I wonder how someone would kill themselves with their feet.

Suicide rates for both males and females have generally decreased since the mid-90s with the overall suicide rate decreasing by 23% between 1999 and 2009.

Suicide rates for males peaked in 1997 at 23.6 per 100,000 but have steadily decreased since then and stood at 14.9 per 100 000 in 2009. Female rates reached a high of 6.2 per 100 000 in 1997. Rates declined after that and was 4.5 per 100 000 in 2009.

Thanks for sharing that.

It's ironic that similar countries saw the same small drop, even those which did not collect any guns.

Perhaps the most similar country would be New Zealand.

Even the USA saw a sizable drop.

Neither of you have backed up your claim. Provide proof and shoot him down.

I provided a link to the numbers. You can check it out if you want.

For the record, I was not attempting to attribute the decline to anything - just stating the decline exists where Danno said it did not.

You are right I misspoke but not intentionally.

I should have said their decrees was in line with what other countries experiences, perhaps even less.

One would expect somewhat of a "extra drop" due to less guns (kinda makes sense) yet we see nothing to rally around as a means to stop people from killing themselves.

I wasn't trying to be a jerk to either of you. I was interested in seeing the numbers myself.

Of course thats what I am interested in too.

We really have two questions

-Would gun control make much of a difference (or make it worse)

-Would any established right be worth throwing away if doing so will make a improvement in law enforcement?

Japan has one of the highest suicide rates in the world. And very strict gun laws. No handguns. Where there's a will, there's a way.

And this list should be a real eye opener for the anti gun crowd. Lots of countries with strict gun laws that are ahead of the US in suicide.

Again, when they rattle off comparative numbers they are very selective on who they pick.... so the numbers say what they want.
