Let's look at this logically and rationally. A black kid goes into Barney's, a white man's la te da store. He buys a belt for $350 and uses a debit card to pay for it. The clerk has to automatically think that card is stolen since there is no way in hell a black kid could possibly have a debit card, let alone with a bank balance big enough to cover the belt.

So one would naturally call the police assuming the card was stolen. If he had paid cash, it would also have been even more suspicious. No way a black kid could have that much cash on him unless he robbed someone, a liquor store, 7-11, etc. So the conscientious store clerk called the cops. And again, just doing their job, the cops have no choice but to bring the kid in for questioning. How could a black kid have a legitimate debit card? Why would he be shopping at a white man's store? This surely warrants a look see.

The store clerk and the cops should be commended for a job well done.

Oh, and if the kid was white, none of this would have happened.

Q: If the shop were yours and you would be out the money if it were a stolen card.... would you have acted, gave it a second thought or not?

why is this relevant to the topic at hand? you constantly respond to current events with unrelated, superficial, scenarios.

Why would I assume every customer might be using a stolen card? Or should I only think this if the customer happened to be black? And that's if I own the store. What was the clerks motive in this case?

He want's to see who would profile due to the kid being black. If it was a white customer, no suspicion, no story.

Thanks for your answer.

Why would you not be suspicious with some white customers as well?

Why would I be suspicious period? Someone comes into a store, chooses an item, pays for it an leaves. It happens millions of times a day around the world.

SO your position is, all people are qually as likely to be using bum checks and stolen cards.... There are no patterns to age, dress, race.

No, I think that the majority of people use legitimate debit cards when paying for something. This article isn't about a bad check. Or a stolen card. It is about someone being profiled for no reason at all. A young man went into a store, chose an item and paid for it. I think that is still legal in all 50 states. If a 5 year old walks into 7-11 and puts a gallon of milk and a $5 bill on the counter, the clerk sells them the milk.
