How the hell is it out of the ordinary for a young kid to spend his money on expensive clothing and accessories?! That's what they do! Even if it IS suspicious - after going through the motions of checking ID (if using a CC) that's all that needs to be done! Have you seen how much designer shoes cost? The young girls I worked with were always telling me about what expensive items they were buying, because that's what they spent their money on - they didn't have to pay rent or pay for food.

No, on it's own it's not. I think the ID had to be the thing that they didn't like, it had to have looked fake. The purchase on its own was nothing.

There is a liability by a store to ensure that a cc is being used by the authorised user, they are liable for the debt if they do not so if the clerk at the store suspected a fake id and a stolen cc he did have an obligation to take it a step further.

Absolutely, I agree. I was referring to Danno's post saying that it was an out of the ordinary, suspicious, purchase for a young person to buy an expensive item. Referring to your post - the store is liable if they choose not to check ID etc. and the purchase is fraudulent. In this case though - the store is saying they didn't have anything to do with it. So therefore, if the store felt the purchase was legit - then there should have been no reason to apprehend the young man.

ETA the word "suspicious" as Danno likes to show off his ability to use the dictionary.

I'm not a good judge of what kind of money kids spend on cloths, I simply went by what I thought the store determined.

If the store had nothing to do with it, how did the cop get involved?

bah. If the cop was at the door, walking in, then that's one thing, regular NYPD fraud activity, tied in with the retailer.

Since he was apprehended a block away from the store, I have to think that he was arrested for breathing the air whilst black.

So how did they know he had made a purchase and question him about it? Something isn't right.

"A Barneys clerk, who had asked Mr Christian for identification when he bought the belt, called police claiming the purchase was a fraud, the suit says."

&

"But he got no more than a block from the store when two undercover NYPD detectives stopped him near E. 60th St., the lawsuit said.

“They said my card wasn’t real, it was fake. They said someone at Barneys called to report it,” said Christian."

&

According to his lawsuit, he was detained in a holding cell for about two hours.

He was then released with his debit card, his belt and an apology from the police, Christian said.

A spokeswoman for the NYPD denied Christian was detained for two hours, saying he was brought into the precinct at 7:04 p.m. and was allowed to leave at 7:45 p.m.

“Mr. Christian was held in police custody for approximately 42 minutes and as soon as we determined that the card was authentic, he was immediately released,” said Inspector Kim Royster.

Seems Barneys needs to get their checkbook out, write a large number on it & make payable to Mr. Christian.

http://usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/10/23/21098696-black-teen-sues-over-arrest-after-buying-350-designer-belt#comments

A 19-year-old college student from Queens says he was handcuffed and locked in a jail cell after buying a $350 designer belt at Barneys on New York's Madison Avenue because he is "a young black man."

Trayon Christian told NBC 4 New York on Wednesday that he saved up from a part-time job for weeks to buy a Salvatore Ferragamo belt at Barneys.

When he went to the store to buy it in April, he says the checkout clerk asked to see his identification. After the sale went through and he left the store, he was approached by police about a block away, and asked "how a young black man such as himself could afford to purchase such an expensive belt," according to a lawsuit filed Tuesday in Manhattan Supreme Court.

He should have been arrested for being stupid..Working part time and buys a 350 dollar belt. His right of course, but the things people buy amaze me..we went to the eye doctor the other day After my wife's appointment she came back out. When I got out there they had sold her a 125.00 pair of reading glasses that were so weak .75, Walmart does not even carry glasses that low, because they are almost clear glass.

I killed that deal. LOL

I use to have guys that worked at my company that made 13.00 @ hour and would buy 125.00 jeans

i was going to post this earlier, but i figured i'd let you get all the 'quit yer complaining' comments.

and anyone who spends 350 dollars on a belt should not be allowed to have money.

By gawd we agree on something...I mean of course it's his right but unless you are stinking rich it's stooopid.

On 2nd thought even if you are stinking rich it's still stooopid.

If I was worth a Brazillion dollars I would not by a 400 dollar pair of shoes or a LouisVuitton anything.

He's no more stupid than some rich person who spends 370k on a watch, or a gold plated toilet. He worked, saved his money and bought it.

And if there isn't more to this story, then what? Will it still be his fault?

I agree and said so in my post.I said his right to buy whatever he wants. I also pointed out anyone rich or other wise who buys stuff like LouisVuitton is missing a brain cell.

However at the end of the day it's their money/. i would fight for their right to put it in piles and burn it.and my right to call them stoopid.

Yes there was more to the story.
