LONDON -- An American student was attacked and slashed with a broken bottle just three days after arriving in Britain, police said Wednesday.

Francesco Hounye, who moved to the U.K. from Florida to study aviation, needed 23 stitches to his face after five men beat him following a "heated" verbal exchange in the Shadwell area of east London.

"Every time I look in the mirror from now on I will be reminded of this incident," said Hounye, 22. "I face the rest of my life with the permanent scarring that will be left on my face as a result of this attack."

Investigators believe Hounye was assaulted because he was "obviously not from the local area and they took exception to the fact that he was a bit different."

Why the f^ck was he in Shadwell? I'm not victim-blaming but sheesh. Not a good plan.Something similar happened to my brother in Kentish Town a couple of years ago. He and his wife were on the way back from the pub, and some kids in a car sped through a zebra crossing while my brother and his wife were in the middle of it. My brother told them to go f^ck themselves, and the next thing you know four teenagers are out of the car, kicking the out of him. My brother was then 42 or 43, and it wasn't a fair fight. They kicked him repeatedly in the head and eventually got back in the car and took off. My brother was very lucky to escape with only bruising and some cuts, with no broken bones or brain damage. Good news was that the CCTV got the number plate and two of the kids were successfully prosecuted.

Every time I feel like I miss London, I remember this cr@p.

If he had a gun with more than 7 rounds....I thought it was safe to walk the streets in the UK .NO need to protect oneself ... a officer on every corner. ......Of course a broken bottle means the thugs are armed better than the police correct.

It is safe, however, whoever you are I don't advocate going out at night drinking and getting into street arguments with complete strangers. That's not a safe thing to do anywhere. He wasn't asking to be hurt of course, but at the same time that is a place to argue back and a place where perhaps it's better not to.

To be fair, if you keep a low profile, bad UK streets still feel safer to me than US ones though I agree that UK laws effectively outlaw the right to self preservation.
