Politics in the US

What amuses me, as a U.S. Citizen is how if you're 'conservative' or 'reform' in Canada, you're probably supporting universal health care. Very different scale!

Politics in the U.S. has been very polarized lately, due to the religious overtones of the base of the Republican party and it's only exacerbated by the current military situation. Canada's got neither of those. Plus, we're ten times as big and the world's only superpower (for now.) It raises the stakes for a lot more.

Some assumptions made here as well eh? I'm from Saskatchewan, where the Father of universal healthcare came from, and the LONG history of NDP comes from. Conservative? Westerner? Yikes....

Carla (F)

Yeah, and BC has had lots of NDP governments. I never said the west was completely conservative, I said it was more conservative. The reform party was born in the west. Most of their seats are in the west and they've had to change their name to "conservative" and work hard to earn seats in the east. I don't think it is an unfair statement. And it wasn't meant as an insult, just my observation having moved from one place to another.

PS - I think of Alberta and BC as "the west"! That is hockeygal geography! :)

Thanks, Carla! (F) I've been feeling very isolated at times (though my husband and I are very much in tune on these things), so it's nice to know I'm not alone.

I'm also surprised to hear that the west is conservative too. I've never thought of the political climate in BC as being particularly conservative. At the very least, there's usually room for intelligent discussion.

Ok, well, I never meant to label the west! All I said was from my perspective of things, it was more conservative than I was used to. Vancouver has a mish mash like most cities. It is pretty NDp actually. (and why would csaying a place is more conservative equal no room for intelligent discussion?) Again, guys, I grew up in Montreal. Remember, no one in Quebec cares what you do, as long as you do it in French!

besides, we are still talking Canada. There is a limit!

Sorry, that wasn't very clear at all. :) I was comparing your view that BC is conservative to the "extremely conservative" environment that I'm in now.

Canada has a tenth of the population of the US, so it's less magnified. I think, too, that the overall cultural attitude is much more easy-going there than here.

At least that's my take on it. ;)

You've never seen The Daily Show or The Colbert Report?

Yes I have. I'm not sure what that has to do with my post though?

Did you misquote? Cassie mentioned political satire in tv. :)

Oh, you are suspose to hit the reply button at the bottom of the message, not the top. Oops.

Alberta is generally more conservative than the rest of the country I think. I've gotten myself into a few heated discussions over there about the politics and agenda of Stockwell Day and his ilk (when he was party leader, I haven't been there since).

I actually saw Stockwell Day at the Toronto airport one day when I was coming back from Calgary or Edmonton and I gave him a look that made him turn the opposite direction  I really don't like him, or Stephen Harper and their Mini-Me attitudes :P I think re-opening the same sex marriage debate is probably one of their stupider moves, but I'm sure there will be more stupid things during their reign. Hopefully they'll be ousted sooner rather than later.

I think the US politics of "you're either one or the other" is small minded and archaic. And I'm rather tired of the word "liberal" being bandied about like its a bad thing. I honestly much prefer the Canadian multi-culturalism over the US assimilate or else attitudes. And I think the Electoral College should go the way of the Do Do. Sure, it was necessary 200 years ago, but I think its time to take into consideration that most voters have cars now :P

PLEASE DO NOT PRIVATE MESSAGE ME OR EMAIL ME. I HAVE NO IDEA ABOUT CURRENT US IMMIGRATION PROCEDURES!!!!!
