Can anyone tell me what I need to do to get a Social Security number before I get married? I don't want to work, but I need one to get an ID card.

I have been on here and followed the guide but the link to the SS-5 form doesn't work.

Or those who have done it already, would it be better to wait until you're married? How hard was it all and what about changing of name, specially if you still need to keep your passport?

Thanks!

get to a SSA office, apply in VISA name,

and ask the clerk to look you up in the SAVE database system on your VISA Name and/or A#.

Then if they can find you, give over the SS-5 form (they have blanks at the office).

Then go back the next day. You'll either get the number, or learn of more problems.

Go Get Em, and Good Luck !

Ya know, you can find the answer to your question with the advanced search tool, when using a PC? Ditch the handphone, come back later on a PC, and try again.

SSN guide > http://www.visajourney.com/content/ssn

You should file for the EAD and AP with your I-485 anyway. You may need the EAD in order to get a state ID, or get one that lasts past the time your I-94 expires. Also, you never know if you may need to leave and re-enter the US while waiting for the green card. The fees are waived for both forms when filing with a pending I-485, so no real reason not to file for them. Some people have been waiting quite awhile for their green card approvals.

Yes, do it now. Changing the name isn't a big issue once the AOS is complete, but not having the SS number can create headaches. If you wait too close until the I-94 is expiring, you won't be able to get an SS number until after you get an EAD.

With the changes to the I-94 form, do you still need to wait 2 weeks to show up in SAVE? Has anyone gotten it earlier since the form changes?

Jay-kay I have read that guide already, the link to the SSN form info doesn't work. We haven't gotten married yet and we won't be getting married for another 5.5wks, so I won't be applying for EAD, AP or AOS until then.

I have been here 12 days and I have gotten my i-94 number and can take over copies of my A number also. I will enquire with SSN this week and see what they say, thanks Darnell.

Hm, just checked and all the links in that guide worked for me. Here is the form > http://www.ssa.gov/online/ss-5.pdf

You can also get one and fill it out at the SSA office. You need to go in person and apply. You do not have to be married to apply for the SSN. Take your passport with the K-1 visa in and your I-94 info printed out from the I-94 retrieval site.

You stated you did not want to work, so I was simply letting you know that even if you have no plans to work, you should still file for the EAD when filing for AOS.
