Entered on CR-1, Job Offer, SSN Not Arrived Yet

Hi guys,

The title pretty much sums up my situation. My potential employer is happy that the I-551 shows I have work authorization but is wanting to know how they can pay me without the SSN.

Is there any official documentation I can point them toward?

Now that the federal government has re-opened I would go to your nearest SSA office tomorrow and see what is going on with your SSN. If you indicated on your immigrant visa application that you wished to receive an SSN automatically then it might or might not show up. Your SSA office will be able to tell you whether it's being processed or not, or whether to just apply for a new number there and then. They might even be able to tell you your number if it's in-process.

My understanding is typically things won't show up in the system for approx. 2 weeks following initial entry (for me, Oct 12th).

Obviously there's no harm in me checking, but I'm not 100% this will help right now, so anything I can show in the mean time would be great.

It's more that it's a ####### shoot as to whether your SSC is going to show up at all. It seems you have around a 50-50 shot of actually receiving an SSN if you request it on your immigrant visa application, so it's entirely possible that you're waiting for something that isn't going to show up at all.

Hm, that's a possibility maybe. Thanks for the idea I'll suggest it.

I have done work before I received my SSN, but I didn't get paid until after I received it (and told the employer my number)

Certainly under Quickbooks you do not need a SSN to pay, you add it is later.
