Tango is a free app which allows for free calls between smart phones.

Smart phone in PI: install Tango.

Smart phone in US; install Tango.

Call for free over the internet.

Done.

Why are people still paying?

P.S. You can also video chat with Tango

I think vonage will be the way to go for us. No ISP required, 3000mins per month for 29.95 ($40 after obscure fees! Lol). 2hrs per day.

Thanks for the info!

Really!? If you are talking not having internet in your home it isn't an option, Vonage requires internet. Let's see what Vonage states: Vonage offers high quality VoIP calls for domestic and international calling.

VOIP = Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is a methodology and group of technologies for the delivery of voice communications and multimedia sessions over Internet Protocol (IP) networks, such as the Internet.

Noooo. Don't go Vonage 3000. Cheaper as in my original post. Lunex or direct on Globe (info at first post and with someone's reply here about the direct on Globe). It's a few dollars cheaper at $25 and it's unlimited and don't need internet at all.

**Vonage runs to about 45 bucks after taxes and fees...and that's if you don't go over the 3000 min.

Just found out my NOA2 approved Oct 25, 2013 is still good. Was automatically extended by the embassy until one year of the last date of notification which is Dec 3, 2013. It's a race now.

For Philippines calling, you dial an access phone number, then dial the +63 number (GLOBE only) the Philippines. You don't need the Vonage box. VOIP just means they use internet to connect your call, not necessarily needing an ISP to make the call.

Still, it ain't that cheap! Lol

I'm gonna check this out today! The best rate by far.

Figure unlimited internet in Phils is 900-1200php (and that's not even 4G!), in USA minimum $25 for 1.5mbps, which is crappy slow. So the baseline start is $60.

No you don't need internet or Vonage service in the Philippines, I was referring to you in Hawaii, as you were talking about not having internet at your home either and Vonage is a VOIP setup - they send you a little box, you plug it into your modem or router, then plug your phone into that (identical to how the obitalk works, I had Vonage at one time)

My backa**ward grammar. Oops! I meant for calling Philippines! Excuse the confusion.

No, you DON'T need the Vonage box with the Philippines 3000 plan.

Not sure if I can get a refund for the box as I've never used it! Lol! That would be sweet!

I've been using Ooma for a couple of years in my own home. After you buy the appliance it's 99.9% free to make calls. I pay a $3 monthly federal tax but there is no cost for the service. I plan on buying a 2nd Ooma box and give it to my fiances family. The phone call will be a local number to the U.S but connects in the Philippines as long as it's connected to the internet.

Ooma is better than any monthly service based VoIP providers like Vonage, Magicjack, etc all of them imo

Been intermittently searching for a solution to the communication problem for many years. My asawa's family is just north of Ormoc Leyte in very remote back country - still no internet at the house and barely any wireless service (Smart, not Globe).

First after her arrival in the US in 2007, we used calling cards. Was a fairly good deal since it limited the talk time, but you get about half the minutes claimed. We also had the Verizon landline option to call at I think $0.23/minute landline and $0.26/minute mobile, but it was too costly since there's no hard stop with conversations that understandably run long.

Switched to Time Warner digital phone with their International One Price plan to Phils landline a few years ago at $19.95 for 1000 minutes, and had a landline installed at her family home (Globe). Could also do calls to mobile at much higher per minute rate, but we refrained. Had numerous landline issues there. They'd not know to check for dial tone to be sure service was active, and we'd be unable to contact for a while until we could get a message to them via other means that they needed to request service restoration.

Four years ago during a visit we set up a nice new desktop computer, but couldn't get the internet service started in the 3 weeks we had due to inavailability of local ports. So, wasted expense. The desktop eventually succumbed to the harsh elements, so it's dead.

Then Haiyan (Yolanda) wiped away pretty much everything last November (power still not restored to her house - that was totally rebuilt in concrete block this time) including the landline service that is reported to be a long time away (since locals have appropriated everything that could be used for rebuilding).

Just last week I killed the Time Warner IOP plan that we'd been hoping would be of use again, but after 5 months we've given up. The only option we have now is Verizon mobile at $0.23/minute (I think) to Smart mobile there, and she calls now about once a month for an hour or so, at least for now. So, we're very interested in options that would not require power or landline and Smart mobile. I think our options are few.

Why are you guys paying? getting a U.S. phone number is free and it only takes a few minutes to get one. My wife have a U.S. phone number on her cellphone in the Philippines. We call each other unlimited 24/7. She can call/received from/to any U.S. number for free/unlimited,

We still use vonage because you can have two cellphones with vonage, one is linked to her phone in the Philippines, she don't ever need to buy a load to call anyone in the world.
