Well to be fair to history , The indians did very well in the skirmishes, attacking homesteads. This is what lead to most of the conflict.

We hear the endless refrain of how Americans broke the treaties with The Indians, but when you study into it, it was much more complicated.

We make a treaty and groups of Indians would constantly breech the boundaries and cause mischief, and sometime the most brutal attacks on families.

While I have not counted, I would estimate we had 200 treaties, where we paid for tracks of land and in some cases gave an annual payment only to have the agreed upon land boundaries not mean much.

Another problem was "who are we making the treaty with."

We would come to an agreement, transfer goods etc only to have another tribe show up later and claim that the land is theirs too and the treaty is no good.

Read some of the treaties, some are quite interesting.

I think one tribe in NY still gets annual payment of a certain amount of Calico (cloth) every year and cash.

This is just another example of how Diversity is so often a problem which leads to wars and blood shed.

A lot of indians didn't understand the treaties they were signing. The concept of ownership of land was foreign to them. You keep portraying indians as brutal, ignorant savages whose lives are better because of the white man. At this point though, it's too late to go back and change history, we have to learn from it and as val said to try and make amends.

Clearly your knowledge of the American indian starts and finishes with Dances with Wolves.

I don't think I said their lives were better.

For centuries Indians have taken each other lands by brutal wars, were they better off then?

Europeans continued this tradition except they actually paid them something for it.

Savages? How many people do you know who scalp infants and babies after bashing their skulls against trees?

What exactly is a Savage?

You mentioned "amends" ....what kind of amends are you making?

Or is this just a good idea for others?

Is your home on land that was bought cheap from Indians.... will you give it back?

They did as soon as the chance came.

Have ever seen Obesity rates for Indians?

When you see a real photo of Indians from the 1800's take note of the clothes they are wearing, it aint buckskin.

There is not one tribe which did not embrace every modern connivence.

You and many others would pat them on the head and tell them to -go back to their sacred ways....... but outside of ceremonies, they aren't interested.

What kind of amends am I making? My mother's side of the family is Choctaw. I know what it's like to be on reserves and I know the culture. Please don't pretend to know what my knowledge is of Native Americans or First Nations. I mentioned before that I don't make assumptions about others because I can't possibly know their life experiences - I know this from experience. Your ignorance about Native Americans/First Nations is pretty apparent by your words, and while it's nice to have a pleasant discourse with someone with an open mind, I'd rather not bash my head against a brick wall.

Danno's vacuous post of the day, well one of them. Danno, your ignorance is breathtaking.

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

I take it you don't care to follow up on how you are making amends or who then should?

No surprise.

It's priceless! Without him, how often would you laugh in a day?

You gotta laugh to keep from crying, because honestly, it's so very sad.

So, are you saying that conservatives are more tolerant?

“Hate is too great a burden to bear. It injures the hater more than it injures the hated.” – Coretta Scott King

"Oppressive language does more than represent violence; it is violence; does more than represent the limits of knowledge; it limits knowledge." -Toni Morrison

He who passively accepts evil is as much involved in it as he who helps to perpetrate it.

I am saying people are pretty much people. We all tolerant of what is important to us and we are all hypocrites..I think the difference is that Liberals tend to advertise how tolerant and inclusive and accepting they are, conservatives don't.That means as long as you agree with everything they say.

P.S. I don't consider myself a Republican.
