what is so sad is it don't matter if you approve of the actions we have taken over seas or not..........these brave men and women are doing their job.....many don't like what they are doing but they are solders they follow our leaders orders.........this man died protecting our freedom that includes the right to protest.....and this weird piece of garbage is going to use their right to protest to disturb a funeral given for a solder that fought to keep the freedoms that they/we enjoy.............seems pretty whacked to me

CORVALLIS, Ore. - As family and friends gathered to honor Army Ranger Cody James Patterson on Sunday, over a thousand showed up to support the fallen soldier.

Pfc. Cody James Patterson lost his life on Oct. 6 during an attack in the Zhari district of Afghanistan. Three others died on the same mission to stop a suicide bomber.

Patterson's father, Randall, said at Sunday's service that he knew from the time Cody was four years old that his son would be in the military.

"He also wanted challenge himself... to see if he could be that kind of man - and he did," Randall Patterson said.

Supporters flooded the Oregon State University campus Sunday, hoping to maintain a respectful atmosphere at the service.

Last week a church known for picketing the funerals of soldiers announced a plan to protest the service.The Westboro Baptist Church claims Patterson and other fallen soldiers died in vain, slain by God's wrath.

"To deny us our First Amendment rights is to declare to the world that Pfc. Patterson died in vain and that America is nation of sodomite hypocrites," the church claims.

While the Westboro Baptist Church vowed to protest Sunday's memorial service, officers from the Corvallis and State Police Departments told our news reporters that they hadn't seen anyone from the church group.

A counter-protest quickly gained traction through social media, drawing thousands to the campus to help bar potential protesters from disrupting the service.

"We want to be completely peaceful, and we want to just represent the country that he fought and died for by having the American flag out here to keep the signs covered," said Joseph Hedberg, a National Guard veteran.

A large group of Patriot Guard Riders was among the large gathering around OSU's LaSells Stewart Center. One rider said he didn't expect protesters from the Westboro Baptist Church to show up, but said everyone would "keep it professional" if they do.

Police in Corvallis urged everyone to remain peaceful and refrain from any direct contact with the Westboro protesters.

"It's heart-wrenching in itself because I couldn't imagine being in that family and knowing that this is going to happen at their son's funeral when all they're trying to do is put him at peace," said Alaura Granados.

Hedberg made a Facebook page "OSU Supports Cody Patterson" and shared it with his fellow former National Guardsmen to organize a counter protest at Patterson's memorial.

Sara, I don't think they are protesting the men at all.

I think they are using their deaths to show , as Reverend Wright said... "Our chickens are coming home to roost."

In other words, Because we have turned away from God, the Hand of the USA is now cursed, everything we do shall fail,

including fighting a war with our enemy dressed in jammies using ancient weapons. (Looks like a pot-bomb)

They see these deaths as proof of this and they want you to see it too.

Throwing media events like this only serves their purpose.

They don't care if those grieving families hear them, they want the country to hear them.... and apparently it will.

Fred Phelps has neither the intellect nor the tact that any actual preacher like Jeremiah Wright (derisive though he may be) has. All Fred and his degenerate brood care about is making headlines for the sake of making headlines. Famewhores of the worst sort. They have no desire to bring outsiders to their cause, or to educate the masses about any message. They delight in bringing more pain to families who have already lost loved ones so senselessly. Not at all, I attempted to explain the reason for their efforts.

For some reason we get an idea about a group or movement, it's like it is packaged complete with pictures and you think you understand it yet in almost every case when you look into it.... there is more to it or it is completely off.

The WEstboro crowd is no exception.

They are not protesting the soldiers as much as they are EXPLOITING them.

They and Rev Wright believe in a few similar concepts, one being the "Reaping and sowing" of national sin.

Rev wright does not sink to the pathetic low of intruding on a private occasion.

The Westboro folks think their message is so important, it trumps even respect for a funeral.
