Hi fellow VJ members,

I have a question about passport name change. My wife and I got married in 2012. Her passport is still valid till 2016. She did not change her last name in her passport yet. Do we need to get a new passport with her married name or can she use the passport with her maiden name during the whole petition process. Will it cause any problems, delays if she doesn't change her last name in her passport? Please advise. Thanks in advance.

What name did she use in the i-130?

Married name was used in the I-130. Passport is still valid till 2016.

For us:

Married name on all forms and maiden name in the other names section.

Maiden name on passport and one way ticket.

Visa was in maiden name too.

We just purchased the passport and wasn't keen on paying for another one.

Thanks Gowon,

I did exactly the same. Was just wondering if this is ok or if this might cause any delay or problems in the processing.

In my case, for uniformity's sake, I immediately renewed my passport into my married name after I got our NSO MC. I used married name when we filed the i-130, so the visa will be under married name, as well as the GC, SSN card and also when I get a CA driver's license/state ID.

My maiden-named-passport was valid until 2015. DFA officer asked why I'm renewing a valid passport, told him I got married and want to use my hubby's surname. biggrin.png

If Gowon was able to go thru the process having a maiden name on her passport, I think it won't be an issue. good.gif

It's optional but we also did a change of name affidavit in a Nigerian court. CO seems to have liked it as she asked for and retained the original. Edited by Gowon

The different names on official documents is a consideration but we decided to deal with that by carrying a copy of our wedding certificate and CON affidavit than risking another trip on the death trap roads in Nigeria to the passport office.

Thank you very much for all your inputs, I appreciate them. Good luck to all of us.

I'm not sure on the specific requirements of a Philippine passport, but I didn't change to my married name in my British passport for 18 months. Provided you carry your marriage certificate showing the link between the maiden name in the passport and the married name on the green card, it isn't an issue for America.

My wife did not change her passport but used her last name as a middle name for gc etc. Easy to figure out that way when traveling.

In Arizona its hot hot hot.

Our I-130 was in my maiden name. And now in NVC stage, I emailed them for update/change name to married name. I've also renewed my passport.

I think they will use the name in the passport also for the green card.. In my opinion, I opted to use the married name already..
