The Social Security people are knuckleheads. We applied for my fiancés SS number in August. We were told it would arrive in 2 weeks. Didn’t arrive. We called them. They said to wait 2 more weeks then come in. Didn’t arrive. Went back to SS office in Sept. They said the postal carrier would not have delivered it if the name is not recognizable to him at the address. Duh, she’s was my fiancé! Of course she had a different name! They say, you should have put a care-of on the address when you applied for the SS number. How would I know to do this? Anyway, they put a care-off on the mailing address and requested another sent and said it would arrive in 2 weeks. They told us her SS number – it was assigned, and gave us a letter with the number. The SS card did not arrive. Called them. They said to wait a couple more weeks. We call them again. Come to the SS office. We went in again. My fiancé didn’t bring her I-94. They say they can’t replace the card without an I-94. Run home, get the I-94. Back to SS office the same day. They say, the I-94 has expired we can’t get you a replacement card. “She’s out of status” and can’t work. (she couldn’t work anyway.) I explained that she has an SS #, and she needs the card to get her drivers license, open banking etc. They say, we can give you a letter to take to downtown Chicago to get a temporary visitors license.

Do we have to wait until AOS is approved for them send the f#%k’n card??

You shouldn't need the actual card to do anything...as a matter of fact it is highly discouraged to carry it with you. As long as you have the SSN, just provide the number when needed.

Social Security card is required to get the first drivers liscense or state id card. And can't open a bank account without the liscense or id.

David did not have to show the actual card...he just provided the SSN and it was accepted with no problem. Any time he was asked for the actual card, he explained it is noted on the card he is not supposed to carry it with him.

That is incorrect. Even though my wife had her card we never needed to show it - we used her SS number to open bank account, insurance etc. etc. She did need it to start working but not for applying for work (or even for getting married.) If they are hassling you - go to another bank/insurance etc. - For the Driver's license you may require more than a SSN card (e.g. an EAD or green card also) - here in Colorado they were just sued to stop requiring multiple IDs and rejecting several types of IDs. Good Luck

You must live in a different state.

Can someone answer my original question? Can SS administration withhold sending the card until we have AOS approved?
