I received my green card earlier this week, and today I went to apply for a social security number. When they looked up the number on my card however, my immigration file showed up under my maiden name, not my married name - even though my married name is the name on my green card, and the name I've used to apply for AOS!!! They have to verify that my green card is real, I guess, so now I have to wait at least another month before I can get a SSN.. if I can even be approved. I am so frustrated, my married name is on my card but not associated with the number? How does that even make sense?

We had exactly the same problem with my wife's social security card application. The USCIS is terribly slow about updating their computer records. It took four months for the California DMV to receive verification of my wife's new name just so she could get a California ID card.

We had to speak with a supervisor at the social security office to ask why we could not get a number if we have an approved, tamper-proof, green card. That finally worked, but the USCIS needs to get their act together on this point. So go back again and if they give you the same song and dance, ask to speak to a supervisor.

I'm really tired of the same excuse that they have some much work. How is it that they can issue a green card in someone's new married name, but can't get their computer system updated. I thought all of this stuff was suppose to be intergrated.

apatheticsnail,

This kind of problem is why it's recommended that K1s get their SS card promptly after entry and before marriage. Having the card is important, changing the name on the card can always wait.

Yodrak  As a K1 I applied for my SSN after a week that I entered the USA. It was really fast.

My son got his GC two weeks ago and I decided to apply for his SSN. Well, same situation here, they have to verify with immigration about his GC because his info was not in their system yet. ( this will take about four weeks !?). If everything is ok, they will provide the SSN and send it by mail.

After I entered the US I spoke with someone at immigration (two people actually) along with someone from social security. Everyone told me I wouldn't be able to apply for a SS number until after I got my green card despite anything I had read online.

I'll probably be making an infopass appointment ASAP or at least call immigration, maybe both. The woman at SS was sending out my info for verification today and told me once my identity was confirmed, my card would be sent out. I not only had my green card on me, but my passport (with visa, in maiden name), marriage certificate, birth certificate. She didn't even want to see the last two even though the marriage certificate proves that I am who I say I am... what a headache.

Also, I can imagine this could cause problems at the border if I were to leave the country - what would happen once they scanned my card and the last name that came up was different? This is really irritating and I hope it doesn't take months to fix considering that we have travel plans.

Your name on the USCIS computer system will be the same as the name on your greencard..... the name on the SSA system could be your maiden name or your married name..... they are two different systems.... The SSA having the wrong name will have no effect on your ability to travel as the officers at POE will swipe your greencard and have access to your USCIS case..

I'm confused as to why the SS system has my info? I would think, if they had it in their own separate system that USCIS sent it to them; but why would they send the wrong info?

I brought my marriage certificate (and passport, which they do need, but it doesn't help apparently) and the woman was not even interested in looking at it :( I guess they need 'official' confirmation from immigration in order to give me a card. (one would think that my green card is official enough! nobody can fake those things, with all the holograms.. sheesh.)

Yes they can be faked.... and the SSA gets your information from your K1 entry that is why you are advised to wait 2 weeks after entery to apply for your SSN to allow time for your information to appear in the SAVE system.... so at some point later you turn up with a nice new shiny Greencard in a diffrent name and the only info they have on you is the info from your K1 entry so they have to verify that your are the same person...

Sad to say that doesn't always help. My wife had a valid SS card issued in her married name after getting her EAD. When she got her green card, she tried to get the restrictions removed from her social security card. The SSA office claimed they could not verify her status because her immigration records were still in her maiden name. They told us to work it out with USCIS.

It took us three months, multiple attempts to get SSA to manually verify her status, and an intervention by the SSA District Manager to get it resolved.

But it's been over 6 months since my entry, and my information still hasn't been updated. I was told by social security within a month after I entered that I wouldn't be able to apply yet.

One would think that my marriage certificate, passport, birth certificate, visa, as well as other documents all in my maiden name would suffice at proving that I am who I say I am.
