Don't think she will have any problems with Lufthansa. They are an excellent airline, and are NOT United.

I won't fly United simply because their fares are some of the most expensive out there.

Admittedly, Lufthansa's fare (for HYD-Frankfurt-DTW) was only marginally worse than a BOM-LHR-DTW fare from British Airways (but it was much more convenient for Pras to leave from Hyderabad than Mumbai).

Also true that United charges outrageous fares.

A sample of Atlanta-Calgary return fares in August 1997 (all supposed to be cheapest rate--these were the actual quotes I got):

  • Delta $397
  • AA $421
  • Northwest $417
  • Air Canada $562 (only for comparison; at the time I was on a TN-1 and AC's route left me at risk of stranding)
  • United $1,750

And for further comparison, fares from travel agencies, same timeframe:

  • Atlanta-Mumbai $975
  • Atlanta-Chennai $1,130
  • Atlanta-Gatwick $491

For United's quoted "lowest rate pretzel-class" fare, I could easily have taken BUSINESS CLASS on Delta, Northwest or AA!

I always fly Delta - but I've never really had to go thru customs in an airport as I used to live so close to buffalo airport that i would just drive over and do the customs thang at the border - way less hassle.

I have found that I get pretty good fares from Delta, and when I was flying from Japan a couple times their food didn't make me completely gag, entertainment was good, and it felt like they had more leg room than Northwest (yuck!) and AA (so so)

Singapore airlines for me  They have great foods, great services (blankets, socks and toothbrushes for overnight flights in economy class), and I really loooovvvee their entertainment systems: your own personal screen, with plenty of movies, short films and even video games for kids !!

Yes, Singapore is nice on those fronts. Unfortunately, they only fly from SFO, YVR and LAX--all on the wrong side of the continent.

Flew with Northwest couple of times, and they DO suck !!! I ended up getting transferred to SQ anyway during my flight to US

NWA wasn't too bad for domestic (or Canada-bound); but I have not taken them international.

Singapore airlines is great. Always try use it for flight from/to/within Asia.

But no direct flight to OHare. I don't like airport transfer at all esp. travelling alone. Might try it when travelling back to Indonesia with hubby.

Would a (some airline) domestic flight to the west coast not work (as you are essentially in the middle of the continent)?

British Airways  -great Frequent Flyer Program ( the whole household can combine miles) and the trip from Dallas to London Gatwick ( flown it alot  ) so is much easier than the other airlines into Heathrow!

I just wish we got miles for our phone calls! :P

Take a large, almost round, rotating sphere about 8000 miles in diameter, surround it with a murky, viscous atmosphere of gases mixed with water vapor, tilt its axis so it wobbles back and forth with respect to a source of heat and light, freeze it at both ends and roast it in the middle, cover most of its surface with liquid that constantly feeds vapor into the atmosphere as the sphere tosses billions of gallons up and down to the rhythmic pulling of a captive satellite and the sun. Then try to predict the conditions of that atmosphere over a small area within a 5 mile radius for a period of one to five days in advance!

I hated Detroit airport. Its to big for one, and way to many people in the lines. I was there by myself one time changing planes from Atlanta. I near had a breakdown. I couldnt find my way around and it took me forever to get to my next gate for the flight. I had to go thru that tunnel alone and that creeped me out. I will never go thru there again. Thats the airport that questioned me about coming to visist Roger when our K-1 was going on too. Over all it was just a scary experience for me. I think mainly becasue I was alone. If that makes me a whimp, then I am a whimp

Might try it later on as now I have greencard. Hubby flew on Singapore Airlines when he came to Indonesia and he can't complain - flew domestic with American carrier to SFO and flew Singapore Airlines from there.

It was $1,200 Jakarta - OHare, with overnight in Singapore covered. Northwest was only $100 lower, but changed planes in Narita & in Detroit. Prolly I was lucky

What didn't you like about NWA?

Well, they are not reliable for international flight. They cancelled my flight just 2 hours before the departing time !! When I asked them what happened, why the cancelled the flight, the answer was: lack of CREW !! The domestic one that I took from LAX to MSP was small and noisy, with unhelpful stewardesses.

Too bad that SQ doesn't have the O'Hare flight anymore, but they have one that goes to JFK besides LAX and SFO.

The reason I chose Northwest over Delta is because their terminal in Detroit is GREAT! And they still fly the DC-9 which is old, comfortable though. But it is quite loud. For some reason, the louder the aircraft is, the easier I sleep on them.

You should sleep great after you get married. Between Karen yelling at you for everything and her loud snoring, you're just about guaranteed to get 12 hours a night of sleep.

Everybody I know who has taken WestJet loves them and hates Air Canada. I've never flown WestJet as they don't offer any flights that are what I need to get south. Too bad. I'd really like to fly with them sometime.

It depends where I fly. If I go home to Cayenne (Guyana), I must travel fly to Miami then fly with Air France because it is the only airline which deserves this destination. To Africa, you must stop in Europe: either London with BA, Sabena in Brussels or KLM in Amsterdam. I have no preference, really. I also flew with South African and Emirates airlines once, it was good too. As long as they take me from point A to B, the rest doesn't matter.

Westjet started off as a discount airline but now they are just as expensive as Air Canada. Other than that, I have heard nothing bad about Westjet.

I guess I've just been lucky with Northwest. I still think Detroit airport is great. Never had a problem with the tunnel, it seemed kinda nice... although a bit dark which can make people nervous.

Lufthansa is probably the best airline I've flown with, closely followed by Air Singapore.

However, due to the fact that I usually fly out of Indy and connect somewhere to fly into Amsterdam (closest airport from where my parents live), I haven't flown either in a while. I've had decent experiences with Continental (before they started charging for alcohol on transatlantic flights) and Northwestern/KLM, and ok-experiences with American and USAir. Delta I will never fly again because they don't have enough legroom and they have been way too rude on several occasions.

Does the JFK flight go Atlantic route (which kills some of the convenience by going through Europe) or Pacific?

There was only so many choices I could put. And since the question was which airline do you take to fly to the US, I chose the more common ones. I didn't have any room to put Air France, Singapore, Malaysian, Cathay Pacific, Japan Airlines, Alitalia, Hawaiian, Air New Zealand, Aloha, Varig, Aer Lingus, Dragonair, Turkish, Condor, Thomas Cook, KLM, Air Malev, BMI, Vietnam Airlines, Swiss Air, China Airlines, US Air, Iceland Air, Scandinavian Airlines, Finn Air, Olympic Airlines, Asiana, Korean, Emirates, Air Sri Lanka, ANA, Pakistan Airlines, Air India, Eva Air, EL AL, Royal Jordanian, South African, Aeroflot, Austrian, Iberian, LOT, and others.
