if the I-94 is already expired, then yes, I agree with that.

but I doubt your I-94 is expired, from reading your scant timeline (hint - update it, la)

So, I say, go in again, ask for a SAVE Database lookup there, in your VISA NAME or A#,

and see what happens.

If it's been less than 2 weeks since yer POE event, is possible you aren't in the system.

Bring in yer I-94, also.

You have 76 days aftere POE date to apply, using VISA Name is the safest.

bring passport, I-94 and a birth certificate. (Many people not bring the BC and get the SSN regardless)

once you are at the office, you will fill out SS-5 form. They have blanks there.

However, ask to be looked up in the SAVE Database. If the clerk seems dumb, slow-brained, or ignorant, ask for a supervisor.

Well that "Forrest Gump Graduate" is wrong. You can get your SSN with the I-94. Did you print out your I-94 and bring it along?

SS-5 http://www.ssa.gov/online/ss-5.pdf

Excerpt:

Evidence of Immigration Status
You must provide a current unexpired document issued to you by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS)
showing your immigration status, such as Form I-551, I-94, or I-766. If you are an international student or
exchange visitor, you may need to provide additional documents, such as Form I-20, DS-2019, or a letter
authorizing employment from your school and employer (F-1) or sponsor (J-1). We CANNOT accept a receipt
showing you applied for the document. If you are not authorized to work in the U.S., we can issue you a Social
Security card only if you need the number for a valid non-work reason. Your card will be marked to show you
cannot work and if you do work, we will notify DHS. See page 3, item 5 for more information.

Talk to a supervisor. Some of those clerks are either dumb or lazy that they don't want to do extra work with changing you name to your married one. A lot can still get their SSN with either their maiden or married name so it shouldn't be an issue if you don't have EAD or GC. Just talk to someone higher :)

Thanks guys! Yah unfortunately we experienced those kind of employee that don't know what they're doing. I'm glad we came back to the office and talk to someone else. and actually he didn't asked the form I-94 when he saw the stamp on his visa he said that's the only thing we need but we show him his birthcertificate too in case. But yah we did it. they will send the card in 2 weeks.

It's not uncommon to meet with someone at SS that does not have all the information and of course I don't blame them personally. There is so much to learn and the SS laws are difficult for a lawyer to understand let alone an employee. It's been my experience that you much read up on the topic that you are going to inquire with SS and know as much as you can so you can arm yourself with the right documents and know the procedure.

Just last year, I turned 60 and thought I was eligible to collect on my deceased wife's benefit for widowed spouse benefits. The person that I met with explained that I was not eligible but I was sure I was. I left the SS office scratching my head. Over the next couple of months the thought kept coming into my and so I did research on the subject and found that I should have been eligible and so returned with all my documentation and spoke with another clerk. She agreed and because I had my documentation from my first meeting she retro active the payments.

If you think your right do your research and that's what you did here by asking questions about your situation. I'm glad things worked out for you and thanks for sharing.

Cool. Yeah ! Go back next day, or Monday,

and

GET THE NUMBER !

If they don't have it next day, then you'll learn of additional problems.

Best to go back, not wait on the mailing.
