how long must he live in order to collect the $417K in total lifetime benefits.?

I am assuming that the study or wherever you got these numbers from would also have the answers to these question..

I agree the system is unsustainable and changes have to be made...

I'm afraid I am not a big fan of privatization in this instance, Conciliator, unless there were ironclad agreements that beneficiaries could not come back to taxpayers if their investments fail. Under privatization, without such agreements, what would happen if the market crashed ? I'll tell you - no doubt they would be bailed out by taxpayers. And that is unacceptable to those of us who work for a living and are already screwed by the current unfair tax system. So I actually think SS should stay under the government (one of the few things I think the generally good for nothing government should do) for this reason. But obviously people should not be taking out more than they put in, and EVERYONE should be paying taxes!
