Adding to health insurance with SS#

Hi everyone. Has anyone had any luck with adding their new spouse to their insurance without them having a social security number? Thank you!

ME!! My husband added me to his health insurance with out ssn way back 2011. and i never had any problem about it. I guess it depends on the insurance your spouse have..

I added my wife. The first response was it couldn't be done both from our HR person and who ever is was at the company that sets up our health insurance. When I said I'm sure its possible because they already have my SS number and I'm the policy holder, not her. They looked into it, and suddenly there was no issue with her not receiving a SS number yet. But I had to push them to look or they just would have gone with their assumptions and said no she can't be added.

It shouldn't be a problem. My husband contacted his benefits department and was told I didn't have to have one.

My benefits admin told me a few days ago it wouldn't be an issue. Just give them the number when we get it. It won't impact or delay coverage.

My health insurance still doesn't have my SSN and it's been years... they do not need it. They think they do, but they don't.

Our annual enrollment just ended at my company and I had to call in with some questions.

Turns out my company (or the general convention) lets an arrival in the country count as a qualifying event. Basically as long as I call and change coverage within 31 days of entry we can alter our healthcare coverage. She has company healthcare where she works now and wouldn't be able to use the US coverage until she got here anyway so that was actually a really nice bit of info. She also has no SSN but they can add her without it and update it later.
