Hello,

My mother had her immigrant visa interview in Amman, Jordan on October 3rd, 2013. At the interview, they requested more documents but did not approve or deny her the visa. The pink slip they gave her does not say 221(g) or administrative processing in it, just tells us what additional documents to submit, which we have submitted. However, when I check the case status on ceac.state.gov, it says administrative processing. So, I called the DoS to ask whether it was internal AP or mandatory, the person didn't answer that but said our case looked great and everything on their end looked great? Then she said your mother just had her interview and it seems like they're just waiting to review those additional papers then the visa should be issued because nothing on her end says "pending"? Then she told me to relax, as it had not even been two weeks.

The embassy in Jordan has only been open four days since we submitted our documents on the 8th, due to an Islamic holiday and won't reopen until the 18th, so obviously I know it may be a bit of time before we hear anything.

I'm a little confused, very nervous and want to be excited, but know with immigration you never really get a proper or correct answer from most representatives. Also, I'm assuming since she said the embassy is waiting to review the papers that would suggest internal AP. But nonetheless, is that a good sign that the DoS representative told me that? And could it be that it may have just not updated from the embassy to the DoS system yet (if that makes any sense)?

Thanks!

Hello,

The DoS number is 1-202-485-7600 (or if you're dialing from Jordan, it's 001-202-485-7600), press 1 then 0 to speak to a representative.

Mandatory administrative processing (from my understanding) is when they send your case back to Washington DC to run name checks, background checks, etc...this can last for a while up to a year or sometimes longer, but usually in Amman it's about six months or less. Mandatory AP happens often in middle eastern countries, especially with males.

Internal administrative processing is where your case is still at the embassy level and is being reviewed by the consular, which also can take up to 60 days.

Have you emailed the embassy? I'm sorry that you're going through this, it's rough! Hopefully you receive your visa soon!

My husband had AP in Amman, it was internal and lasted 10 weeks. Just because it's internal does not mean it will be complete in 60 days. AP and AR are the same exact thing, it can take place internally or at the federal level in DC. Either way there is no time limit, or a way to know if it will last a 2 days or 2 years.

The best thing for you to do is email the IV unit at the consulate directly. When my husband was in AP in Amman I emailed them every 2 weeks and they always responded within a day or 2. Calling the DoS won't get you anywhere, the info they get is from the embassy. The email for the IV unit in Amman is on the US embassy Amman site. Good luck
