If the House and Senate don't pass a bill before the 17th, Obama has two options. He can either allow a default or he can instruct Treasury to ignore the debt ceiling.

The GOP will impeach him if he does either of the two options available to him.

What I meant by "successfully" was conviction and removal from office. It requires a 2/3rds vote in the Senate, and that won't happen.

Impeachment is just a straight-up majority vote in the House. The question there is how politically damaging Republicans think an impeachment will be to themselves. Their popularity is already being hurt by the debt ceiling fight, as a majority of Americans (right or wrong) blame them for it. Can you imagine what would happen if the country were allowed to default and they tried to not just point the finger at the President (which is normal politics), but have him forcefully removed from office?
