SSN question from EAD and an additional question.

My wife applied for a SSN prior to the government shut down. They told her it should be mailed within 2 to 4 weeks. Should we still expect this time frame as she was awarded a SSN and is awaiting the card in the mail, or should we assume until the government resumes we will not see it? Opinions? Advice?

Can my wife apply for a local state ID with an EAD card, marriage certificate, passport(with maiden name), or would this not be enough for the state of South Carolina? I know I can look at the dmv, but I am just looking for a general consensus.

If you applied right before the shutdown, then chances are the actual card would not be processed and mailed out until after the shutdown is over.

The EAD is usually accepted for obtaining a drivers license or state ID. The only way to know for sure what the requirements are for state is to look them up, or call and ask your local DMV.

~ Moved from AOS from Family Based to Social Security Numbers- not about AOS process:main question/topic was about SSN ~

We applied more than four weeks before the shutdown (Aug. 29) and still haven't received the SS card. I'm sure the shutdown isn't helping any, but I'm guessing the 4 weeks is a rough estimate at best.

I'm curious, I & B, have you called/gone in person to get your actual social security number (not the card, just a report of the number) to make sure that your application was accepted? I could be wrong, but I thought we would be able to go back a day or two later to the same office and receive the number itself, and just have to wait for the actual card in the mail.

I'm anxiously awaiting the end of the shutdown, since we were scheduled to go in to the office two weeks ago but haven't been able to yet. If the actual card is taking over a month, that's one thing -- but do you have your NUMBER at least to use on bank/insurance/other forms?

My understanding was that we would not get a number until we received the card in the mail. I'm attaching the relevant text of the receipt letter to this message. It's not completely dispositive of your line of thinking, I suppose, but my reading is that there will be no SSN until the vetting is done and card issued. Also, no one mentioned anything about returning to the office earlier for a number.
