I don't understand Reddit! ranting33va.gif Anyone here familiar with it?

I'm a fairly regular reddit user, and I think it's unlikely that the reddit community would take up our cause. I'm not saying no one can or should try, but I think it's wise not to prepare for a warm embrace from them. The message would have to be changed for that audience. Edited by BOS_LHR

I am about to file my I-130 and I worked for Obama's campaign as a field organizer in Florida (in a really redneck district where people threatened to kill me, too). I would be more than willing to make a video, and call out the administration for betraying me.

And how would you describe Reddit's audience?

Seriously, is there really so little empathy out there for people who are following the law to the t?

And how would you describe Reddit's audience?

Seriously, is there really so little empathy out there for people who are following the law to the t?

There are a ton of good people on there, but soap boxing just won't work. There are too many trolls. Reddit is in large part a platform for sharing interests, funny internet content, etc. Empathy exists and acts of kindness happen but not so much mass political movements. Periodically I do keyword searches on reddit to see if people are discussing things relevant to us (CR-1, I-130, visa, immigration, etc.). There is an r/immigration but it has fewer than 1,000 subscribers. Capturing this audience would need more than a single post; it would take creating a dedicated user account, regularly reading everything on that sub, commenting, and referring to our issue in relevant places. Like this post, for instance: http://www.reddit.com/r/immigration/comments/1oo1ki/what_part_of_legal_immigration_dont_you/. If you read the comments to that post, though, you'll see the kind of attitude we'd be up against with redditors.

You'd probably get a more sympathetic audience on r/longdistance, but those individuals are often teenagers and college students in LDRs, not married people going through immigration processes.

R/politics has the broadest audience (most subscribers) of any of the subs I know would be applicable to us, BUT any post we made is likely to be buried under the deluge of stuff added there every day. Also, to post to r/politics, it would be better to have a news article we could share and then have a lot of us comment on -- which would require some helpful journalist getting something published online for us first.

To give a reddit campaign a chance at success, we would need a ringleader to do the posting, and a lot of VJers would need to create accounts to upvote those posts, add comments, and generate popularity for them.

I see. Makes sense.

I saw there is also r/petitions but not much traffic there..

I guess it'd only work if there was more of us.

I posted the letter on a few other forums. It mostly gets ignored but I got one lifetime ban (:D), one deleted thread ("not a place for propaganda"), one "I-130 backlog benefited many" comment...

Ugh.
