Social security number application

Hey guys!

I hope I'm right here.

So my k1-visa got approved and I'll go back to the states soon.

I read that I can apply for my social security number before marriage but due to the shutdown that wont prolly work out.

Can I apply for a social security number after marriage if the I-94 is still valid?

Or do I have to wait till the aos is through to get one?

I try to apply fo EAD and I read that I need a social security number to work, get a bank account etc.

I don't wanna wait 6 months till I can do that.

So many questions!!!

You can apply for your SSN after your wedding but it will be in your maiden name (I believe) because all your USCIS records are in your maiden name. Once you have received the card in your maiden name you go back and change your name.

Due to the partial shutdown of the federal government the SSA are not issuing new numbers and cards, so you will have to wait before that is resolved before you are able to visit and apply for a number. You must have at least two weeks of validity left on your I-94 to be able to apply on the basis of your K-1 alone, otherwise you will have to wait until you have an EAD or your green card in order to be able to apply.
