I live in rural southern florida, huge majority white, and almost 50% of the school children receive free/reduced price lunch. additionally, since those families are eligible for that service, they are also eligible for welfare, obama phones, reduced price from Comcast for internet service, government assistance for utility bills.. all forms of welfare...

where I live, welfare has a white face...

Being eligible for a free lunch gives you an automatic cell phone, free internet, etc etc...So now we know were all the free stuff goes.

I am sure the same may be true in parts of Appalachia etc. Just saying overall

P.S. the free lunch program is way out of control also

It all has to do with what the government rates the poverty level is regarding income...

the regular price for a school lunch is only 2.25/day... oh, and if someone receives free/discounted lunch, they are also entitled to free/reduced price breakfast at the school... it is just amazing all the free stuff you can get if you do not work... I could see a difference if someone was permanently disabled.. but it disgusts me that able bodied people can get all this free stuff.. at the very lest, the government should require these people to perform community service, ie, clean a park, clean an animal shelter... do something for your freebies, eh..?

and I do understand the statistics you quoted were nationwide. so I am not arguing your point.

yes. how dare those kids eat lunch! not on my nickle, hell naw!

Right, don't punish the kid because the parent's are deadbeats.

With the free lunch though the kids should have to take a personal finance course. I'd help pay for that.

So, kids should just suck it up and go without lunch at school, sins of the father and all that?

How old should they be? Starting in grade 1?

Ah I sense sarcasm...

Do you think that teaching personal responsibility is a bad idea? If someone had taught this to the parents who bore children that they are ill prepared to support then this wouldn't be an issue would it?

Obviously, the lesson must be commensurate with the level of comprehension but if that needs to be clearly stated so be it.

...and here in 'merica we call it 1st grade.

I know right? I can't understand how we, the taxpayers, waste money on education and school lunch for our kids, when we could be putting our money too better uses such as financing a war somewhere! The horror! The humanity!

I don't ever feel it's dangerous to state my opinion. What's dangerous is to stop listening to others.

working parents, struggling to make ends meet with stagnant wages and constant cost of living increases, make up the majority of kids who receive reduced lunch in my neck of the woods..

imagine taking care of four school aged children on 14 bucks an hour "with" a deadbeat 20,000 behind on child support. you wouldn't qualify for food stamps (in virginia), lunch costs would be about $60.00 bucks a week. the person making that work out doesn't need any sort of lesson in personal finance. they already know how to walk a tight wire.

Go back please and read what I posted about lessons in personal finance.

I'm not sure why it raises such righteous indignation to suggest that a problem can be fixed through education.
