Well, my personal belief that Jesus was unmarried, and had siblings, has no bearing on defining my faith and Christian belief system. If evidence comes to light that yes he was married, I will be the first to say "cool!" and move on. ;)

Spoilsport! what kinda fight is that? :P yer supposed to get all defensive or offesive depending on the side of fence you proclaim for!

Now they're just gonna have to find a new fight.... sheesh...

Sorry, I just think there are more important things to get my knickers in a knot over than whether or not Jesus was married!

Jesus spent all of his time talking about love..........no way he could have been married.

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

Plus, Mary Magdalene's whole role has been completely distorted by the Church throughout the ages. Only recently have they publicly stated their error in painting her as the worst sinner of the times.

Isn't there something about the Gospel according to Mary Magdalene?

Well...it seems to me I remember The DaVinci Code insinuating that Mary Magdalene might have been Jesus' wife....

I personally believe that Jesus never married. He came to the earth to die for our sins and knew this was his destiny. I dont think he would want to take a wife, have children and put them through that kind of agony knowing what was to happen.

Some Christians teach that Jesus didn't know about his heavenly life or his destiny until his baptism at age 29 (referencing Matthew 3:16 where it talks about the heavens being opened up to him, indicating that it was the knowledge of what had gone on prior to his life on earth).

So if that's to be believed and Jesus wasn't fully aware of all that had come before or what was required of him, it's quite possible he did marry (which for a normal Jewish man would have taken place years before age 29).

Just more food for thought.

I offer two humble rebuttals to that (in the spirit of additional food for thought :) ):

1. within the concept of the Trinity (Three in One), Jesus is fully man, yet God as well (the "God the Son" portion of the Trinity), ergo He'd have a notion of what was going on.

2. in Luke 2:42-50, it relates an event in His life when He was 12 years old, this is part of that section:

46After three days they found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. 47Everyone who heard him was amazed at his understanding and his answers. 48When his parents saw him, they were astonished. His mother said to him, "Son, why have you treated us like this? Your father and I have been anxiously searching for you."

49"Why were you searching for me?" he asked. "Didn't you know I had to be in my Father's house?" 50But they did not understand what he was saying to them.

His response to the situation, even at a young age, indicates to me He knew exactly what was going on. But that's just me. And I am sure that others will come along and see it differently, 'tis the nature of humanity, after all. ;)

Like I said before, whether or not He was married has no bearing on why I have Christian beliefs, nor will it change them if I come to find out He was married -- but this thread has been awfully interesting to read!

Agreed on the Trinity part, although I've never had anyone explain the Trinity to me in such a way that made it make sense to me from the standpoint of the sacrifice (i.e. if Jesus is God and vice versa then how much of a 'sacrifice' was it when he ostensibly knew he could pass the tests and resurrect himself?) (Note that was an example of why it's confusing to me, I'm not looking for the answer here nor am I challenging the concept as a whole, just saying that because it has holes for me, means I tend to not use that as a way to explain it for myself.)

As for the situation when he was 12, I've heard a couple of sermons on how Jesus would have known of his parentage (probably from Mary & Joseph when he was old enough to comprehend such things), but that the entirety of his destiny wasn't made clear until age 29 at baptism. So that one could go either way for me too. (Of course, I'm a skeptic so I'm sure you'll take that into account. :P)

Good points!

BTW, thanks for responding without thinking I'm trying to slam your beliefs. I also don't think the question of Jesus being married or not is particularly crucial in light of the more important aspects of his life and purpose. But that's just me. ;)
