I asked my Gypsy if he thought it possible Jesus had married... and he said no because he had taken the vow of the Nazarenes which precluded marriage.

What would it matter? I personally believe Mary remained a virgin until her death and assended immediately into heaven upon her death. I also believe that Jesus was never married and never had brothers or sisters.

The bible mentions Jesus had brothers... but you seem to disbelieve that... may I ask why???

That is a literal interpretation. I believe you are refering to Mark 3:31-35 "And his mother and his brethren came; and standing without, sent unto him, calling him. And the multitude sat about him; and they said to him: Behold your mother and your brethren without looking for you. And answering them, he said: Who is my mother and my brethren? And looking round about on them who sat about him, he said: Behold my mother and my brethren. For whosoever shall do the will of God, he is my brother, and my sister, and mother."

I don't believe that means blood relative.

In fact James and Joseph, "brothers of Jesus", are the sons of another Mary, a disciple of Christ, whom St. Matthew significantly calls "the other Mary". They are close relations of Jesus, according to an Old Testament expression.

Jesus had a brother called James I remember that distinctly from the days when I used to believe in god. I will do a search now to ensure I provide you with details.

Paul and I met on the Bazaar on the 14th January (he joined my progressive rock forum that day)

July 3rd he flew to England to meet me

We fell in love while he drove all over the place coz I cannot read maps (we were supposed to go to Ingleton - but touched Darlington 4 times, Pierce Bridge 6 times, Scotch Corner twice and Bernard Castle twice and we never did make it to Ingleton)

It has been so long and so much has happened in between...

Arrived in Houston on October 29th 2006

Married 17th November 2006

Lost my father 8th January 2007 (all dates are a blur after this)

Conditional Green Card dated 24th October 2007

EVENTS IN JESUS' LIFE THAT PEOPLE DISAGREE ABOUT

His siblings: Roman Catholics believe that Mary was a life-long virgin and that Jesus was the only child that she gave birth to; he was her first-born and last-born child. The Bible identifies four "brothers" of Jesus: James, Joseph, Judas and Simon. He also had at least two "sisters." However, their exact number and names were never recorded. Some Catholics believe that Jesus' brothers and sisters were in fact half-siblings; they were children of Joseph by a previous marriage. Other Christians believe that the 6 siblings were really cousins or close friends.

His marital status: Almost all Christians believe that he never married. This would have been very unusual for a Jewish male in the 1st century CE. During that era, almost all Jewish males married early in life. Although there is no direct evidence that he was married, some liberal theologians have pieced together a scenario that suggests that he did marry Mary Magdalene -- perhaps at the marriage in Cana in the Galilee, as described by the author(s) of the Gospel of John. They note that the early Church taught that she was a prostitute, even though there is no evidence of this in the Bible. Some of the writings of the early Church that never made it into the Christian Scriptures described Mary as playing a major role as a leader of the disciples. The theologians speculate that the Pauline church was trying to cover up Mary's actual role by degrading her status.

I have never understood why some Christians become so dyspeptic at any suggestion that Jesus took part in normal human activities. The Gospels depict quite clearly a number of scenarios in which Jesus did some very human things and demonstrate that he was subject to human challenges and emotions, even as the Son of God.

As far as I know, just about every Christian denomination puts forth that Jesus was fully human and fully divine. To me, at least, "fully human" is far more interesting than "fully divine," because it raises the many, many questions about who Jesus was and what is expected of those of us who want to follow him. Why are people so uncomfortable with the suggestion that Jesus had siblings, or a wife, or children? Why do people violently object to the idea that Mary had biological children with Joseph? Does that make Mary somehow less remarkable for her courage and wisdom in accepting her role as the Mother of God? Does it make it somehow less humbling that the Son of God chose the life of an outcast and the death of a criminal to demonstrate the godly life to the world?

Just askin' is all.

Well, since it's been shown time and time again that the original word in Aramaic to describe Mary actually meant young girl and not virgin...yes, I think there is much mis-translation and that it's certainly possible that Jesus could have been married and could have had children, as well as siblings.

Carry on...

Yeah, I can totally picture a Catolic Priest finding that.

But then, it was established to keep church property within the hands of the church, and not passed off to the children. Money and Power, have nothing to do with real reigion... people just make it all about that. No matter the calling.

Well, my personal belief that Jesus was unmarried, and had siblings, has no bearing on defining my faith and Christian belief system. If evidence comes to light that yes he was married, I will be the first to say "cool!" and move on. ;)
