I like the Eastern European way better. I'm Hispanic, and Caucasian Americans (hah) think that it's a race... it was simpler when I lived in Russia to explain these things to them, because they don't have the force-fed PC thing to worry about.

OMG now we have "caucasion Americans" rofl.gif

You are right. I always found the lack of PC (and attorneys) to be very refreshing. If the average HR manager in the USA spent a day on the costruction site in Ukraine they would vibrate and explode like the aliens in "Mars Attacks"

I think they should be required to visit and see if they explode or not. I am afraid that the lack of attorneys is quickly coming to an end, but I never see them being PC. They say what is on their mind and that is that.

Yes, it is very refreshing. That is one of the reasons I married a Kazakh, but how do you tell people here in the US (oops, there's that PC creeping in)?

RUB women tend to want to look good, they want their things to look good, they want their husband to look good...at least look clean and dress appropiately. They are not so hung up on whether you look like Richard Gere, but they want you to look clean and decent. [...] "I am the wife, I can do it"

Buddy of mine (never a VJ member), who married an Ecuatoriana, says that she spent something like 19 hours connecting on 4 flights to get from Ecu to his town, and the first things that she did (upon just arriving!) were:

-- make a beeline for his closet and start throwing out anything that she considered unacceptable;

-- remove his deer-antlers and other hunting/fishing items from the den walls;

-- order him not to have his pals over to drink beer or watch football.

I told him that if Mrs. T-B.-to-be had done anything like that, I'd have shipped her shapely hindquarters out on the very next flight back to Ecu.

Interesting to me was that when Mrs. T-B.-to-be first entered my/our house, she didn't pause in the entryway to take it all in; she immediately scoped every room, concluding "I can handle this." (I presume that she meant housecleaning, but see the "RUBbettes & Housework, Si Man" thread in this very forum for the lowdown on that.)

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

I had been Ukrainianized before I met Alla. I don't even have TV but I am sure she would object to pizza, beer and football.

She did not throw anything out, but she WILL say...you need some new shoes (pants, shirts)

There is no ice or Coca-Cola in the house, shoes off at the door, Tapochki on at the door. Alla's reaction after going around the house like a new cat was "Seems normal"

Judging from the holes in the sidewalks in Ukraine (walking on sidewalks in Ukraine is 3 clicks more difficult than trails in the mountains) I would say there is still a lack of liability attorneys. Also, there is NO WAY they are going to run the escalators in the subways THAT fast once the attorneys take over!

I see plenty of people that need to be sentenced to work construction in Ukraine for 2 years. They will NEVER complain about anything else again!

Saw a guy at dinner last night. Wearing a Tux, with a very attractive woman in her 30's...a smokin' hottie, even by Ukraine standards. The check comes and this ...idiot...makes a complete scene of lambasting the waitress for...$1. ONE dollar.ohmy.png Sorry, but when I finish my dinner with Alla dressed to the 9's I do not care about $1, just get me the check and let me get out of there. He needs two years with a "cordless" shovel, backfilling foundations by hand in Cherkassy.

It would take forever to get in/out of the subway if they weren't that fast! At least in Kiev, it's extremely deep, it takes like 3 minutes on the fast escalator as it is, you would need a book if the escalator were slower. I can't imagine using the slowpoke American escalators with such depth.

I, especially, love the angled platform that's used for deceleration when you disembark at that high rate of speed!) I never new escalators were capable of "ludicrous speed" until I went to kiev!))

If they are angled like the new subway in Almaty, I can see why they go fast. The new subway is hardly used and the escalators are of NY type speed, but at UK type angle and you go DEEP into the Earth and I felt like I was going to fall backwards a few times going up. Down was not a problem. So maybe the "Ludicrous" speed is to keep you rooted on the stair so you do not fall off. It will not be a problem when more people use the subway and it becomes packed like the buses.

Yes, they are very deep in Kiev. But they are just as fast in Kharkov and Moscow. But imagine what happens when an American falls on the escalator in an Amerian city
