Hi, I'm new in this forum, I found this post on google 'cause I have the same issue.

I'm finally moving to the US on November 19th and on January 22nd I have to be back to Italy for about a month. Can I do it even if I won't receive the green card before that day right??

I'm pretty scared about loosing my resident status!

- Civil wedding: September 10th, 2012

- I130 sent to the USCIS in Chicago on January 2013, while my husband was deployed

- Interview at the consulate in Naples, Italy in August 2013

- In the US since November 18th, 2013

- Green card in my mailbox on January 9th, 2014

Welcome to the forum! You may actually receive your GC before you leave as it typically takes about 1 month or so to receive it once you enter the US. When you arrive in the US, your visa will be stamped and that stamp acts like the I-551 which is the document number of the GC. They will put an expiration date on that stamp that makes it valid--typically 1 year. You can use that stamp to re-enter the US. You might want to check with the airline to make certain they know about the stamp and not give you a hard time.

Have a good trip,

Dave

You just posted on a 2 year old thread, ;) Welcome to the forum however. :D

Read your visa. It says when it's endorsed it serves as a temporary green card for up to 1 year. The POE officer will date the endorsement for expiration. You will be fine.

Wife returned with an I-551 stamp in her current valid foreign passport. Least her POE officer understood the super long delays in ten year green card applications. But nobody else did, like her employer and the state's DMV.

Hope you get a knowledgeable POE officer.
