Well, I felt like it would be too rude to enforce the rules of grammar unsolicited on VJ. And so even though there were glaring errors everywhere, I never corrected them. So I was only policing in my head anyway.

And yet I made a lot more money in the UK doing a comparable job...

I pay more in taxes and deductions here than I ever did in the UK. Try adding up all of your tax deductions for Federal and State tax and then add your healthcare deductions to the total. You'll find it's the same, if not more than UK tax.

In fact, on my last wage slip - my total deductions per pay check amount to a grand total of 35-40%.

Yes, I always say the same things when this subject of "higher taxes" comes up - my taxes as a percentage of income are almost exactly the same here as in the UK before deducting the some $10,000 I pay in insurance premiums for myself and my husband. That's also before I pay for any costs not covered my by insurance or I pay for an out of network doctor.

But here I can write off a lot more things than I could in the UK. Most business-related expenses

are deductible. Mortgage interest is deductible. Business-related dinners and entertainment are

50% deductible. Cars and equipment (e.g. computers) can be depreciated. If you use your

home as a place of business (which I do), you can deduct a portion of your rent and utility bills.

Lots of other things. Even gambling losses are deductible ;)

Most of what you are talking about are relevant if you are self-employed or run your own business, but not if you work for someone else.

I'm looking at my overall tax bill after deductions -- and I can tell you that it's the same.

I work for someone else *and* run my own business - an LLC which unlike Ltd companies

in the UK uses flow-through taxation: all your business losses, profits, and expenses flow

through the company to the individual members, thus avoiding the double taxation of paying

corporate tax and individual tax. There's no similar business entity in the UK (that I know of.)

Off topic and out of curiosity, what does your LLC do?

Now back to your episode of Lost...

The bottom line IMHO is the less government involvement in my life the better. Each American citizen knows what is better for themselves and their community than a few guys in suits in Washington. That Federal taxes are as high as they are is a disgrace. More power should be in the states.

What is this-no trans fats in NYC...GMAB!!!!! Why don't we have socialized food now so that the government can control what we eat and drink, too. It is disgusting. :help:
