When I was a youngster, there was a period of time when they were not protected. I found one that had fallen out of a nest and abandoned by the parents. Well more likely the younger one pushed out by its sibling so the sibling could grow strong at the expense of the younger back up egg. Shortly after they were protected again, but I had already been in contact with the DNR so they knew mine was grandfathered in when protections were put on them. The second one I got from another person who had it, but he ran into a little trouble with the law and wasn't going to be around for a few years. That one was also obtained before they were protected. I did occasionally get someone reporting me and officials showing up wanting to take them away, then I'd point out the history, giving the exact dates they were obtained and when the law protecting them came up, and say look it up at the DNR, they know about these owls, so they'd leave and never return. One died of something one winter, and the other I reverted back to the wild. For a long time I supported that one by feeding her a few times a week, then less and less over time. But for a couple years I could go out and call her and she'd come flying in, even after I stopped feeding her. Finally she found a mate, and no longer came to my calls. But when I would go to her nesting site, I could still tell she remembered me, as she was never nervous if it was just me there.

There was long a prejudice about owls. When other birds of prey were protected, they often excluded owls. They were actively hunted for a while. I think it was 73 when they got protected. Then that was removed at some point, then they got added again, even though the population is in no danger. Kind of the "but they're so cute, no one should hunt them" response. Rather than being wise though, they are really pretty dumb even for birds. Almost all instinct and little thinking.

So I think we will be going to the movies. Yay
