This article might help you. I like HP, I have not been happy with Toshiba the past few years. But even with HP, I do not like their low end products. I only deal with higher end laptops with my work, so if you're not going with high end machine, my opinion is rather worthless. The cheapest I spend on a laptop is about $1200, and usually over $2000. If you're looking to spend less, I'd look at the current reviews and particularly look at how well they're supported in your area. You'll want both phone support, and a good service center in case something breaks.

When you say your laptop has been worse the past 1.5 years, what do you mean? And were you aware the typical lifespan of a laptop is 2 to 3 years? When you get 4 years, you've done good. Back when Toshiba was still making good machines, I bought exclusively Toshiba. I have a 10 year old Toshiba that still works great. Its not terribly fast today, but it gets the job done.

Thanks, Cary! I'll check this article :)

By "worse" I meant, that its internal hard ####### got overheated (or whatever it is called) and I hat to replace it with a new one. It worked for more than a year, and one day in June (this year) it stopped. I got it repaired, and now it's happening again. Just when I turn on my laptop, the disc doesn't start at all. After the June's repair, I haven't travelled with my laptop at all (in case the shaking might broke it again). But looks it doesn't like me anymore and wants to be replaced once and for all :)

I know laptop's life isn't too long, but I hoped it would last 5 years without any issues. Guess I was wrong.

K, I won't!

I will buy it in January, so I still have some time to re-think this over and over again... :D

May be we should fire this fat marklar (he's not coming back to work till Monday) and hire a coffee girl instead. She'd be more useful.........

I dare you to do that! :D

Sounds like some fan or sensor needs replacing or the power supply is running too high a voltage. Since the regulator for the power supply is usually on the motherboard of most laptops today, replacing the entire thing is probably called for.

Oh I have an backing on which my laptop stands. It has an additional fan and I turn it on when the internal fan starts working harder. But I think it's been not enough for some time.
