Home For ChristmasL Happy Advance Parole Story

Hi everyone,

I wanted to say that although the USCIS is frequently the bane of our life, on occasion they do come through... after a little perseverence.

My wife and I were married June 3rd this year in Minnesota and I had entered the US from my native England on a K1 fiance Visa just over two months earlier. Once married we went through the usual process to Adjust Status. Our Biometrics were in July and then when we received our interview date in September we took that as a sign that things would be safely processed in time for us to go home to England for Christmas with my family whom I hadn't seen in many months.

However when October 24th, the date of our interview at the USCIS office in Bloomington, MN, came round, we were told that whilst all was approved, they were still waiting on the FBI name check. The interviewer advised us to apply for a travel document I 131, fiendishly called 'Advance Parole". I resented applying for this, simply because of the implication that to apply was assenting to the principle that we are somehow criminals needing parole. Alas, despite having to shell out nearly another $200, I applied and included a copy of the flight tickets.

Via online tracking at the USCIS website I was able to see that the travel document hadn't even been touch in over a month. Not only so, but the to change our flights would cost at least $200 a ticket. So, sick and fed up with things, I made and "InfoPass" appointment last Thursday.

At 08:45am I presented myself to the attended, a Y. Yan, and explained the situation and showed him the tickets. He went behind the scenes and made some calls while I waited. After a while he returned and took down my credit card details for DHL courier and said that if all goes through, we should have the travel document in a couple of days.

Returning to the office, I checked my email and within the hour had received 8 (!!) emails of approval from the USCIS. Finally, yesterday, DHL called before 10:30am and dropped off a pacakage containing the approved I-131 travel document.

Thank you Lord for delivering in time for Christmas. Our prayers remain with those still waiting on processing and documents, or missing beloved relatives from whom they are parted this holiday, but take this story as encouragement that persistence sometimes works - and it never hurts to give the USCIS people a push in the right direction.

Lastly, if anyone has any stories of how their return into the US with an I-131 Travel Document went, we'd really like to hear it.

Best wishes,

William and Amanda
