WASHINGTON (AP) — Democrats controlling the Senate plan to move quickly toward a vote to allow the government to borrow more money, challenging Republicans to a filibuster showdown as the time remaining to stop a first-ever default on U.S. obligations ticks by.

A spokesman said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid could unveil the measure as early as Tuesday, setting the table for a test vote later in the week. The measure is expected to provide enough borrowing room to last beyond next year's election, which means it likely will permit $1 trillion or more in new borrowing above the current $16.7 trillion debt ceiling that the administration says will be hit on Oct. 17. It's not expected to include new spending cuts sought by Republicans.

Um yeah

And to think just a week ago Obama said (with a straight face too)

"An increase in the debt ceiling does not mean there will be in increase in the debt"

That's an accurate statement. Shows that the President understands the concept while you do not.

I'm gonna try to put into simple terms that even you might be able to grasp:

Q: If I was to have my credit card limit raised right now, how much more would I owe?

A: Not a penny.

There, really easy.

If you had to have your credit limit raised right now to make the minimum payment how much would you owe?

I doubt you can overcome the numbness between your ears enough to see the difference

i don't get it.

Yeah, I was afraid that you wouldn't get it. I tried to make it simple but it still wasn't simple enough for you.

that's not quite fitting. it's more like raising the credit card limit on your teenager's credit card when she maxes out her credit limit every month. what could possibly go wrong?

Your analogy is wrong because the same entity that needs to do the raising of the debt ceiling also is the one that does all the spending.

But be all that as it may, raising the debt ceiling costs $0.00 and increases the debt by $0.00.

Ah, another member with limited understanding of the matter at hand. Explain to me how raising the debt ceiling raises the debt or how is costs a penny.

why don't you tell us when the debt ceiling was raised and congress didn't take advantage of that higher ceiling?

Good luck. He's worse than Carville when it comes to facts. He was trying to tell me that Nixon and Reagan gave away free cell phones the other day.

If the President was not going to spend more that the country takes in income, then you would be right, but he will. One Trillion dollars more or less, in order to get him and the Democrats through to the next election. The money is not spent until the Treasury cuts the check, and guess which branch of government overseas the Treasury?

How is that relevant? The debt increased because Congress decided to spend more than it took in not because it raisd the debt ceiling. Raising the debt ceiling costs $0.00 and increases the debt by $0.00. Not raising the debt ceiling, on the other hand, has the potential to increase the debt dramatically in no time flat.

He didn't tell you any such thing. Go back and read what I said. And he has a firm grasp on the fact that raising the debt ceiling does neither cost money nor does it raise the debt by even a single penny. That is a fact no matter how much and how long you deny it.

Fixored. Congress controls the spending. The President still gets to write the checks, or not. Sometimes the courts insist the President writes the checks, even though Congress said no. Sometimes the President just spends money that wasn't authorized, and tries to make that all "good" by insisting Congress passes a supplemental, and by engaging in his own fund raising or redirecting of government assets.
