The Constitution doesn't need to explicitly grant that right for that right to exist and be protected by it. That's long settled.

So the Costitution does not expressly grant the right to vote, nor do any of the Amendments. Correct?

But it isn't. no0pb.gif

I see. The relevant amendments that ensure that the right to vote is not withheld on the basis of race or gender got it all wrong. These amendments protect a right that per the Constitution dosn't even exist. They falsely refer to it and recognize it as a right. You should really tell someone that they got these amendments all wrong.

I don't have to. Smart people already know. ;)

And that could be why The Slate advocates amending the Constiution to do just that.

It could also be why congressman Mark Pocan (D-Madison) has proposed just such an Amendment

Except the 2nd amendment. That amendment was written by god almighty...never to be changed.

Glad you accept that. Now go hug your .32 and move on away from that subject

ON the issue of voting rights - a peek into colonial America. The right to vote when this country was founded came with a responsibility to own property and pay taxes.

The basic principle that governed voting in colonial America was that voters should have a “stake in society.” Leading colonists associated democracy with disorder and mob rule, and believed that the vote should be restricted to those who owned property or paid taxes. Only these people, in their view, were committed members of the community and were sufficiently independent to vote. Each of the thirteen colonies required voters either to own a certain amount of land or personal property, or to pay a specified amount in taxes

A peek into colonial America? That has nothing what so ever to do with this country now. The original founders had no intention of letting anyone vote that wasn't rich.

The country needs to evolve and stop looking at the 250 year old frameworks as never changing gospel. Wake the hell up.

You wake the hell up. That was true then, and it is still true today. If you believe this country has moved or is moving in the right direction you're as numb as your buddy bigdog.

Is that bigdog, or Mr Big Dog?

I suspect they may be two completely different people, but I'm not entirely certain.

If you mean that shutting down the government for no reason as moving in the right direction then I think your founding fathers would find you ignorant of the entire purpose of the government...as in to govern. Not governing seems to be what your party is best at and it seems to fill the needs of its base. Why, because they told you so.

But go back to your tea party for your opinion. A party started by "grass root" billionaires and filled with willing lemmings marching you all off the cliff.
