WASHINGTON (AP) — Instead of sending suspected terrorists to Guantanamo Bay or secret CIA "black" sites for interrogation, the Obama administration is questioning terrorists for as long as it takes aboard U.S. naval vessels.

Indeed. The suspect will be brought to the US to be tried in a court of law. He will not be brought to some installation where generations to follow will have to wonder what to do with him.

"By holding people in secret prisons, known as black sites, the CIA was able to question them over long periods, using the harshest interrogation tactics, without giving them access to lawyers. Obama came to office without a ready replacement for those secret prisons. The concern was that if a terrorist was sent directly to court, the government might never know what intelligence he had. With the black sites closed and Obama refusing to send more people to the U.S. detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, it wasn't obvious where the U.S. would hold people for interrogation.

O has evolved from ridiculing a land based Guantanamo - He built a floating Guantanamo. Much more...exotic & mysterious. Where's the ship? Did you see the ship? I heard it has a cloaking device....ooooh. That's so cool.

& I suppose O has evolved beyond criticizing / condemning torture - He makes the ship a "vacation cruise" experience for his guests.

Why would anyone be surprised? The question is, do you think it suprising and wrong that a 'communist' president goes along with pragmatic decisions to protect US security or not a surpise because in reality he's not as left wing as extremists from the right have constantly claimed? I am not surprised because there was no evidence in the presidents campaign that he would in fact attempt to change the political environment significantly. The most he promised was to consult with the opposition and attempt to bargain compromise. This is not something the right would require a compromise on, they'd be all for it so he seems to me to be running consistent with his promise. Whether I agree or not is another matter, but I am not surprised so not disappointed either.
