Fun stuff to do at a wedding reception

 Share

So we had a little wedding for the purposes of the visa, which was planned in 2 weeks and only had about 20 people there. Now we're planning a bigger reception but I'm not totally sure what to do there... It seems silly to redo the ceremony, so I'm thinking dinner and dancing, but what else can we do to make it wedding-like (even though we're already married).

Thanks for any suggestions!!!!!

things I've seen at receptions... but these were all normally following the wedding ceremony...

Dinner, of course

Cake cutting - bride and groom "feed" each other, but they end up wearing it instead :-D

The traditional toast, where the two try and make like a pretzel and wrap their arms and glasses around each other...

Some times, it's hard to get people dancing... so usually the first dance after the meal is the bride and groom... Dance a full song, and have the DJ or who ever start a second slow song.. and the DJ explains, when the music stops, everyone dancing (just the bride and groom at first) has to go pick someone out of the crowd to dance with... And every 30 seconds or so this happens... so then you have 4 dancing, then 8, then 16... and you basically get everyone out there.

Groom/Mother and Bride/Father dance......

Something I've seen alot is the Dollar dance... basically it's a way to try and get some money for the happy couple... the DJ plays slow songs until everyone's had a chance to do this... if someone wants to dance with the bride and/or groom (my dad was good for dancing with both lol).. they have to pay at least a dollar. Most people give a bit more.. say 20 or more... And it's about a minute or so of dancing.. and then next...

If kids are there, it's always fun having the bride (I keep typing bridge lol) and groom lead everyone in some kid dances... the Hokey Pokey, the chicken dance, the mexican hat dance.. etc... you'll be surprised how fun it is for all... even those just watching...

Probably know about tossing the flowers and the garter... well, legend says that for every inch the guy that caught the garter puts it above the knee of the lady that caught the flowers is supposed to be another year of happiness for the bride and groom. Only thing is, he does it blind folded... and the lady gets switched with a dude.. so he's playing with someone's leg (preferabbly bare.. with a stocking on it) and everyone's laughing and taking pictures... and when they get way up there, someone takes the blind fold off... quite a look of surprise on their face when that happens.

Thats all I can think of right now...

DRINK!

But lookit....if YOU want to wear the dress and have the ceremony again, that's your choice....who cares what anyone else thinks?

That's how we're doing it...small wedding in the keys, then when he can get his AP or whatever, everyone's flying over from the UK & we're all going on a cruise. We'll 'renew our vows' with the dress, tux and everything.

And if anyone thinks it's stupid....f*^%& em :P

Thanks all for the suggestions. Lisa, you're right, I should do what I want to do and not worry about what "they" think, it's my party after all!

most receptions = free beer

Go girl...

Yeah we are facing the same dilemma. We got married in Oz, and are having a reception here in Florida. We are going to eat dinner and just mingle I guess. BOOZE IS KEY :) I'm not wearing mydress again because I HATED my dress.

I want it low key. I'm only doing it for my parents - and to get to register! HAHA

We were married in Oklahoma, and only a handful of our family were there. So, at the two open house parties we had in Canada (long story!), we did the following....

--Jerry and I dressed up in our wedding finery, so people could see our outfits up close and in person

--we brought our wedding albums for people to flip through

--we had lots of food (buffet style) and wedding cake, very similar to the setup we had at our wedding reception the night we were married

--we basically set up everything and decorated it much like our wedding day -- they got the same wedding favours, they signed the same "wedding wish" cards, etc etc

We went bowling after our wedding reception, so in the spirit of doing something fun, we flew kites on my grandparents' front lawn with our niece and nephew (and the rest of the "kids" ;) ).

The whole point of it all was to have fun seeing everyone and hanging out and celebrating the fact we got married. It was all low key and relaxed, and awesome.

Go rent Wedding Crashers....

They did a lot of fun things at the wedding receptions, but there was a key ingredient that's been suggested throughout this thread already....

ALCOHOL!!!

And have some music too, you can't go wrong with a little SHOUT and some YMCA..... it's a good band, it's a bad band, who gives a ######, it's like pizza baby, even when it's bad it's good.
