Hey y'all,

My fiance and I decided not to try a border crossing so he is flying to Montreal from Vancouver. I am driving up to meet him. We will be staying in Stanstead, apparently a small town right on the Vermont - Canada border. Anyone know anything fun to do there or in the vicinity ? (although I might not need anything to do, I will probably just be hugging him and staring at him, so glad I get to see him!!!) Also, are donairs a Western Canadian thing or can I find them in the Montreal area too? I am dying for one!!!

I have no idea what these donairs everyone is talking about are. Anything like a gyro? Try a real souvlaki... plenty of those in Montreal. Arahova used to make a decent one. 11 years ago when I lived there anyhow!

Donairs are more of an east coast thing than a west coast. They are similar to a gyro, but I belive the sauce is different. back in my Navy times in halifax, woke up hung over with an unexpected donair by the bed, yuck!! lol

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Donairs are an east coast thing.. The sauce is pure sweetness (condensed milk and sugar). They do have Pizza Delight in Quebec, that's what you need to find. We went to one in Drummondville this summer. They have donairs. mmmmmmm I will miss that :( It is similar to a gyro, but i think they are made of a cucumber based sauce.. which is good, but totally different than donair sauce. I'm hungry now.

Donair Meat

3 pounds lean hamburger

2 tsp pepper

1-2 tsp cayenne red pepper (depending on your taste)

1 1/2 tsp oregano

3 tsp paprika

2 tsp onion powder

1 tsp garlic powder

1/2 tsp salt

Combine all ingredients in a large bowl. Knead for 20 minutes. Shape into two tightly formed loaves. Bake on broiler pan for 2 to 2 1/2 hours at 300 degrees Fahrenheit. Cool loaves and slice thin. Meat can be frozen for future use.

Donair Sauce

2/3 cup canned milk

2/3 cup sugar

2 Tbsp white vinegar

1/2 tsp garlic powder

Stir canned milk, sugar and garlic powder until sugar is dissolved. Slowly add vinegar and continue mixing. Let sauce sit for at least one hour in refrigerator before using.

Preparation

There are lots of Donair places in Alberta. I love them, but I don't like the sweet sauce. There have been some places I have had them where it has been a yogurt and dill sauce, that I liked. I'm good with no sauce, I love the meat!

I have lived in Montreal and I don't recall ever having a Donair there, not until I moved to Alberta. But I love the submarine sandwiches you can get in Montreal, they fry the meat first. It is a heart attack on a bun, but mmm mmm good!! If you find a Belle Province there, great food!!!

And the poutine, smoked meat sandwiches, pastries, It's no wonder I was a really fat kid :)

oh. Montreal food. Steamed hotdogs.... go to LaFleurs or La Belle Province. Get their version of a chili dog and fries.

I don't know about Montreal, but when I lived in Ottawa there were a ton of shawarma places around, they're pretty similar I think. On another note, I had some amazing donairs in Germany, they're all over the place there. This tread is making me hungry!
