What's next?

* No more dean's list at colelges?

* Eliminate GPA altogether?

* REaltors no longer list their top sales people?

* Lawyers no longer get to show their billable hours?

* Athletes can't have stats posted??

where will it end?

Finally finished with immigration in 2012!

But why shouldn't excellence be recognized? I don't understand why *not* making the honor roll should be such a stressful thing.

To some students and their parents, it means everything - especially if they are hoping to get into a top college or university.

Sure, but only the top students are going to make it, regardless of the existence of the honor roll.

Right, but honor roll or not...your GPA is what it is! It's not like you can HIDE it just because you don't make honor roll.

It's not about hiding it, it's about making losers feel better because they don't see it.

Why judge them as losers though?? Not everyone thinks high-paying jobs are the definition of success.

I think kids should find the motivation to be good students from themselves.

Not according to the principal in the article. He's more concerned about the stress it puts on the students trying to make honor roll. There's plenty of students who couldn't care less about not being on honor roll...back when I was in HS - we called those kids nerds.

not just high paying jobs.

* Working at McDonalds they post the fastest drive through workers or cooks.

* Any commission based jobs...they compete for best sales person

* Being a TEACHER - very low paying - EVERYTHING is performance based...do well, or lose your job.

Competition and needing to excel is NOT jsut for smart students or high paying jobs.

I think it's time everyone had a mandatory frontal lobotomy performed at birth. That way no one can be offended, discriminated against or upset by anything ever again. We will all be the lifeless zombies everybody seems to be pushing for. Yay, what fun that'll be!

Oh and while we're at it, let's make it enforcable by law that all kids get picked for the football/baseball team/cheerleading squad so kids will never have to learn how to deal with disappointment or learn that results are not a right but must be earned!

So true!!

I was on the honor roll quite a bit (high honors too) and I would laugh at the stupid kids when the list came out. PWNED

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

I just don't think "competition" is a value that needs to be taught. It's something you accept when you want to or need to. I never felt I needed to compete to be the highest seller at Michael's Craft Store when I worked there at 16 because I thought it was a ####### job. I DID compete at other things I felt were important to my life.

Having competed or not in the past had no bearing on how much I valued competition in other settings.

That's just my personal experience.

I was on the honor roll quite a bit (high honors too) and I would laugh at the stupid kids when the list came out. PWNED

I bet everyone loved you in high school.

In any case, grades and school performance is not a competition with other students; it's a competition with yourself to do your best. And it shouldn't be changed into one by competitionmonger adults. Look what kind of kids it produces (see post above mine).

It is though. It determines who goes to college - what college they go to - what clubs they can join - if they can play sports - if they can get scholarships...

Teaching them otherwise will be disastrous for their future!! Kids can't even play sports in HS without an appropriate and high enough GPA!@

Obviously, success is very relative - what is success to one person may not be to another.

However, most people would consider a high-paying job an indicator of success.

I think kids should find the motivation to be good students from themselves.

Motivation doesn't come from within. You're not going to work 10 hours a day if you can

work 5 hours a day, all other things being equal.
