My green card just came in the mail yesterday... what a shock, considering that I only got the approval notice e-mail late last week! I haven't even received the welcome notice in the mail yet. So much for 60 days.. I can't believe all of the security features on the card, it's amazing. Tomorrow I go apply for a SSN!

Just a quick question.. for anyone who has traveled after receiving their green card, did you have any problems or hassles re-entering the US? We'll be going up to Canada (where I'm from) next spring for only a week or so. I know my GC means I'm legally a resident, but border security isn't always very nice as I'm sure everyone knows. (We'll definitely be avoiding the Niagara Falls entry point...!) I just want to be prepared in case there is anything I should bring (besides my GC, of course). Also, should I apply for another Canadian passport now with my married name? I know I can't apply for an American passport until I'm a citizen, and I imagine I'll need a new passport before I can travel anywhere. Thanks in advance!

I'm also from Canada and have had no problems entering Canada or returning to the U.S. with my GC. I show my GC when entering Canada and also went returning to the U.S.

My passport is still in my previous name, so I just carry a certified copy of my marriage certificate to show why my name on my GC is different from my Canadian passport. I don't use my passport for my trips to Canada, though, I just use my GC. My passport still has a few years before it expires, so I'll change it to my married name when I need to get a new one.

I'll also be applying for a U.S. passport right after I become a U.S. citizen (I will be applying for naturalization next summer).
