Another open-air memorial in the Washington area is closed and barricaded off: the Iwo Jima Memorial, just across the bridge from D.C. in Rosslyn, Virginia. A source sends along this picture of the barricade set-up at the memorial, which is also called the U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial:

"I took the picture yesterday afternoon. Those barricades had been there at least a day. People can still walk into the Memorial area, but for many elderly and disabled vets, it is important they be driven and park right next to the statue," the person who took this picture emails.

"There has been no coverage of Iwo Jima being closed and it is a routine stop for Honor Flight visitors."

The source adds: "This picture is from North Marshall Drive (100 yards up the hill from the 110) facing the only road in and out of the Memorial for cars. There are parking spots for cars and buses right next the Memorial that can only be accessed via this road. Interestingly too, the view you see is also the last 200 yards of the Marine Corps Marathon which is in three weeks. That would be 20,000 pissed off runners who have trained for months."

The stop is a popular destination for veterans and tourists alike, and, in my observation, is usually completely unmanned and unguarded. But, for some reason, it's closed to the public during this federal government shutdown.

UPDATE: I'm told, "The Syracuse Honor Flight just knocked down the barrier and a couple hundred of them are at the Memorial now."

The Japanese could not keep them off Iwo Jima. Seriously?

Why close a statue? Obama cannot keep illegal roof shinglers out of the US, he thinks he can keep Marines away from a statue?

If Obama wants to make a statement and end this thing, then either

1. Compromise with Republicans like you did with Assad

OR

2. REALLY close down the government. Turn off SS and Medicare/Medicaid, food stamps, and WIC. Close VA outpatient clinics. That will get it moving again...right now!

Clearly Obama only hurts himself with these news stories of blocking access to things that amount to nothing but spite. All of these monuments can be accessed anytime day or night. A few years back I toured all the War memorials on the mall in the late evening, including the WW1 (which very few people even know of).

I am surprised Obama does not construct a visual barrier around the Washington monument so it is not visible until he gets his way.

I am trying to imagine a circumstance in which the government of Ukraine would CLOSE the "Memorial of Glory" in Kharkov, dedicated to the 275,000 people from that city that died in WW2 (more than ALL the Americans killed in the European Theater were killed in ONE city) Are you kidding me?

It is amazing we have degenerated to the point where we would tolerate this treatment of our heros! Despite their problems, and the fact that the "country" the men and women in Ukraine fought for at that time NO LONGER EXISTS, no one has forgotten what they did and never will. There is nothing political about it. Despite everything, 2 Revolutions, 3 economic collapses, political upheaveal that shook the world...someone comes EVERY DAY for the last 70 years and puts fresh flowers on the memorial. The school children march by EVERY DAY to honor what these men and women did. Young people leave notes which say "thank you for my happiness" "thank you for my freedom" "thank you for my life" . Newly married couples walk there in their wedding clothes and thank the men and women that allow them to live every day. Who can even read these and not be impressed? Shut it down? Put up barricades? Because of a political temper tantrum? What kind of @sshole would one have to be?

This is nothing but the silly temper tantrum of a little boy not getting his way.

Obama...either SHUT IT DOWN...SHUT IT ALL DOWN...or STFU and cooperate. You are an embarrasment. You LOST the election in 2010 and you did not recover in 2012. Deal with it Obama...the American people have spoken! Elections mean things and you LOST.

Up yours Obama! If it were not for the stupid signs at statues, no one would even notice the government is "shut down"
