My fiance was recently approved for her K-1 and is arriving soon. We are planning to get married but we found out that in the state of Ohio we both need to have social security numbers in order to get a marriage license. I called the local SSN office and they told me that due to the government shutdown they are no longer accepting applications for new SSN. With the limited 90 day period for K-1 I am worried about this. I have already called ahead and planned out the civil ceremony dates (Nov. 21) but I am fretting that the shutdown might derail our plans and consequently our time to file a AOS. Anyone else going through this who is soon applying for an AOS?

PS: Our plan b is to go to another state where they don't require SSN to get a marriage license. But we don't want any questions to be raised as to why we went to another state to marry. Though it might just be the fall back plan. Plan c is to contact USCIS and ask for an extension based on these issues though I am not sure they will approve extension based on this.

You do not need a social security number to get married, but if you have one you are obligated to provide it when you apply for a marriage licence.

Indiana does not require SSN to obtain a marriage license. We live in Arkansas but got married in Indiana. I don't think they'll question why you got married in another state and even if they did you have a valid reason.

I married two days ago in Georgia, and I couldn't have Social Security Number because of Shutdown.

But I could get a marriage license without it, and I just filled a form requiring my name, nationality, and my signature.

I just brought my passport with my K-1 visa.

I ran into the same issue. I live in Missouri which requires a social security number so I went to Kansas and got married. I would suggest you try going to another state, I doubt they question where you got married. I applied for my husband social security card 8/26 (I think I went to early he arrived to the states 8/14), I received a letter 9/30 stating they needed to verify some paperwork and if everything is ok I'll receive his ssc in 4 weeks, but now I'm wondering with the shutdown if that will be even longer.

Talk to your HR department. Mine was able to put in a dummy SSN so my wife can be on my benefits.

In my county in Maryland the rule said that both parties needed a SSN. I went there and explained she was not a citizen of the US and they were able to still give me a marriage license. Give them a call and explain your situation.

You don't need a SSN to get insurance, they just use that number usually as it's unique to the person. They should allow you to use some other number like maybe her passport number, or they'll make up an ID number for you.

I also got married without providing my social security number (in Texas), since I didn't have one at the time. I informed the county clerk of that and he made a note of it, that was all.

As I say, it's only compulsory to give it if you actually have one to give.
