Younes' brother just got engaged. They are having the engagement party tonight. I want to send a present but I don't know what. Does anyone with better knowledge of the traditions and customs have ideas for what is a good engagement present for a young Moroccan couple?

Hi Futureberberwife,

Here in the Souss region, usually the gifts are given to the couple's family on the wedding day, usually to the mothers, and since the period between the engagement and the wedding ceremonies is not that long, but again I asked my mother and she said this and it also depends, a few close relatives to the couple who can afford multiple gifts they give them presents mostly something that will be useful for the married couple life, it ranges from cash and expensive jewelry to home appliances and the white sugar-loaves the symbol of pure emotions and simple happiness. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sugarloaf

*SENT PACKAGE DECEMBER 5TH 2012*

- Dec 9, 2012: Petition received by USCIS via USPS signature confirmation delivery

- Dec 13, 2012: Cleared check & NOA1 later in day

- Dec 18, 2012: NOA1 (hard copy) received in the mail dated the 12th Dec

- February 26, 2013: Petition is being transferred to another office

-February 28, 2013: Petition was received by unspecified office and alien registration number was changed.

-March 04, 2013: Called USCIS & found out our file was transferred to California Service Center.

-June 4, 2013 NOA2

-June 6, 2013: NVC Received petition

-June 19, 2013 : Petition left NVC

-July 3, 2013: Packet 3 Received (via email)

- Aug 13 2013: Interview Date : (Rescheduled for a later date)

- September 25, 2013: New interview date, initially approved but put into AP for insufficient co-sponsor.

- Sept. 25- Nov. 20th 2013: In AP due to insufficient co-sponsor

- Nov 21, 2013: CEAC website says visa is Issued :) YAY!

- Nov 26, 2013: Visa in hand dancin5hr.gif

I missed your post when you wrote it-it got buried. But thank you for the suggestions. I do want to do something to congratulate them on the engagement since they are delaying the wedding so brother has time to get his financial act together (although bro is currently trying to mooch off Younes...grrr...I love that in Moroccan culture family takes care of each other but bro's priorities are way misplaced if he wants to be married anytime soon). I'll see what budget and practical considerations (and my diminishing goodwill) allow for.
