I too question the killing.

Seems that the threat was negligible and they could have used less than lethal means to capture the offender.

It seems that LEOs are resorting to admittedly justified homicide in their line of work too much lately.

I don't think a criminal inquiry needs to be done per see, but would like this to be used as a training exercise.

Every time a police office discharges their weapon they have to justify it, unlike a civilian who can kill anyone with impunity if the conditions are right.

I think you will have to accept that armed police reacting to any aggressive actions by members of the public are always going to be dealt with aggressively in the US, precisely because of the arms laws you have in place, the number of arms circulating and the inability of the police to reliably establish how big of a threat they are dealing with. Personally, I think that's terrible but until the US decides that its citizens do not have some divine right to carry a gun, that's where it gets you.
