I live and work in Canada, my fiance lives in the US. We've been together about 2.5 years and visit every couple of months. Neither of us are in a position to quit our jobs just yet, as we are getting close to retirement (5 years), but we are reasonably secure financially. However this long distance ####### is beginning to wear thin :-)

If we get married, can I still travel back and forth to visit and keep my job here? I don't want to have to wait a year to go back for a visit.

If we remain engaged for several more years, I guess when I'm ready to move I just apply for the fiance Visa and then get married when I get there. I just don't like the idea of going months and months without us visiting while paperwork is being processed. Is there any way around that?

If we don't get married, it seems it will get harder to visit. The more trips I make the more I am questioned about when I will get married, why do I keep going back and forth and not get married, etc. We are both older, and while we want to get married, it's not urgent. I have a good job now, and with the US economy the way it is I will be lucky to make a third of my salary. I have some savings, but would like to work a few more years to maximize my pension before I leave the country. I don't have the specialized skills necessary to get a work Visa.

It's possible he may move here, but he has family in the US, so more likely for me to move there.

I am learning about timelines and such, but there is a lot of information to wade through here. I appreciate the help and apologize if this question has been answered elsewhere prior to me finding it (I've been looking).

cheers
