Took the wife out to dinner for her birthday. They actually had food to sell at the restaurant. No shortages yet. Electricity is still working here in Texas. Maybe it's because Texas has it's own grid separate from the other states. So far so good.

All I've heard here on VJ so far is some whining about tourist attractions and the commisary being closed at military bases. Looks like Sams took care of that problem. Ohh and someone called a few storms a "Hurricane"

The sheer stupidity of this line of argument is truly breathtaking.

C. I have no idea idea how to respond to the overwhelming facts you presented, so I will just call you a nut job or insult you and move on, and claim I already answered the question. ( this covers the tin foil hat stupidity

I love the whole "the sun still came up and the world is turning" proof of positive effects of the shutdown.

When they start laying contractors off I'm sure that might slightly effect those lives. But hey, maybe they didn't deserve a job. ;)

People getting laid off is generally what happens when there's no money to pay them. You don't just pay them because laying them off might hurt the economy.

Feds hire tons of contractors. I have a buddy in Afghanistan that might come home because they are "restructuring" due to the shutdown. He's trying to buy a house and he's been living in that hell hole for the last 2 years. I give him credit for having the nuts to stay out there in a forward position working as an unarmed contractor.

Maybe coming home will keep him outta the $hit...who knows.

But it is effecting people. We just don't hear of them.

I'd argue that we shouldn't be spending money on contractors in Afghanistan at all. Hell we shouldn't even have any military personnel there. I hear contractors make like 3 times the salary they would make in the U.S. while in Afghanistan. Not sure if that's true.

He makes what I make in the states but with no tax and he's 24. :)

Actually his job is fairly specialized and its freaking dangerous...so I think he's earning a decent wage. I tell you what, I wouldn't do it for that amount. But when you're young you can take risks.

Some contractors are raping the government, but that's no secret.

I'm not in favor of contracting myself. It just adds layers of waste.

I think the point of hiring contractors is that you don't take on any of the B.S. like you would hiring an employee. It's easier to get rid of them etc. The problem with that line of thinking, is you get a bunch of people that never really learn much about the environment they are working in. The same thing with all this off-shore hiring. They think they are saving money, but in reality they're losing worker quality. Hell the time difference alone makes it not worth the savings.
